I have an anxiety disorder. I also have a mood disorder of which has not been determined yet by my psychiatrist but I have been getting manic symptoms along with depressive symptoms. The problem is that my psychiatrist says that it can be dangerous for someone who gets manic to be on an antidepressent which is one of the best meds apparently for anxiety. So my pdoc won't put me on another antidepredssent to treat the anxiety. Is there any sort of med that I could take that would sort out this anxiety issue. A med that wouldn't require being on just for a prn basis either. One thats also safe for someone who experiences manic or hypomanic episodes.
Hasn't your pdoc discussed "benzos" with you? Things like Xanax and a few other even stronger ones? I might be wrong here but I don't think they interact with any of the types of medications most people describe on this board.
They're a take em as you need em for some regular dosage for others and are for treating anxiety. Many people without any issues at take them for things like public speaking, fear of flying, etc.
Their biggest drawback is possible addiction which is always a concern but if anxiety is affecting your life at least look into them if you haven't already.
Not sure about the hypomanic question but someone else will chime in.
Seroquel will help control mania, and is good for anxiety.
The problem with the benzo's is that they are addictive, so they're not ideal for daily use. I do use Ativan on an as needed basis, usually just when I fly.
I've been on seroquel and will never again go back on it. I found that it didn't even do anything to help with my anxiety anyways. I've discussed about benzos and am on 4mg of ativan a day but it just isn't good enough. I don't want to go on something that is highly addictive either.
I'm right there with you, I try not to take mine but sometimes you just don't have a choice and sometime they're not enough anyways. My anxiety has just been shooting up over the last 20 minutes or so. It's leveled off but my keyboards getting pretty wet from my palms (sorry for the image).
I also have sever anxiety and with my BP comes severe med resistant suicidal depression. My pdoc has me on several diff. mood stabilizers that have some anti depressant qualities, but I don't tend to do well with straight anti depressants either.
Soooo...I take a med called BUSPAR, it is strictly an anti-anxiety medication. It is not a benzo, so no dependence issues, it's a regular daily dosed med, no prn basis. You might ask your pdoc about it. It has controlled my anxiety almost 90%.

Sounds interesting may I ask what type of medication buspar is? I will certainly bring it up with my pdoc as soon as I can.

Is strictly an Anti Anxiety medication. If you don't see him for a while, you might want to get an earlier appt. or call him and talk to him about it.
Dealing with anxiety all the time can make things much worse and then from worrying about everything, your anxiety gets worse.
I started it at 15mg and then went to 30mg and then to 45mg which is where I'm at now. This increase in dosage all happened over the course of 4 weeks, so you don't have to wait a long time to tritrate up or down.
