Update on How I'm Doing Bipolar-Wise, etc.

Hi everyone,

Someone on an e-mail list for cochlear implant users wrote to me and said that based on my symptoms, it sounds like I have benign proximal positional vertigo (BPPV).

I sent my cochlear implant surgeon an e-mail to ask him about this. He agrees and believes this is the cause of my dizziness and nausea.

He would like me to see a vestibular therapist and said my symptoms can be treated successfully without meds. I'm glad to hear that because I'm already on 8 different meds and really don't want to be on more if I don't have to.

It feels great to finally know the cause of my dizziness and nausea!

I will be sure to keep all of you updated as to how my appointment goes.

As for how I'm doing, I'm feeling flat today. This always happens to me after I come down from a hypomanic or manic episode. I'm missing my mania and don't like feeling as if I have no emotions at all.

Glad to hear you've gotten some good news! I usually feel flat after a hypo-manic episode, but I think that's because of the med adjustments to pull me out of it.

I've never had a pdoc treat my hypomanic episodes. I'm not sure why, but I think it might have to do with the fact that I'm on a pretty high dose of meds which means there isn't alot of room for increases.

Dreams,

Sorry for the added problems, but glad you found out what the problem was.

Re: Update on How I'm Doing Bipolar-Wise, etc.

Thanks, Kat. I was doing some reading about BPPV and learned that there is a procedure (Epley Maneuver) which is supposed to have an 80% success rate for treating it. I'm hoping it will work in my case. The only thing I worry about is getting sick at my appointment with the vestibular therapist.

Is that where they move your head to turn the crystal's in your ears? My mother in law had that done, when she had really bad vertigo.

Re: Update on How I'm Doing Bipolar-Wise, etc.

Kat,

Here is the e-mail my vestibular therapist sent as to what will be done:

"What I'll be doing is having you perform different head movements and position changes and rate your dizziness. To check for the benign positional vertigo I have you sitting on an exam table, turn your head
45 degrees to one side and lie quickly onto your back. If the test is positive, I lead you through a series of rolls and head turns to treat the vertigo. I'll also have you do different balance tests. Most people tolerate the movements pretty well. Some get a little nauseous. I've only had 2-3 people actually get sick.

Let me know if you have any other questions."

Kat,

Did that treatment help your mother's vertigo?

I hope dreams that this vertigo will pass for you. Sounds like odds are good that it will. Good luck with the procedure.

Thanks, Ben.

I noticed in your signature that you've been diagnosed with BPII. How did your pdoc appointment today go? Were you put on any anti-anxiety meds? If you already created a thread, I apologize. I haven't read the rest of the board yet.

Re: Update on How I'm Doing Bipolar-Wise, etc.

neondreams,

Great that you've found this out! I have, by the way, heard of excellent results from those techniques of treatment, and I do hope they work for you.
Your emotions are just taking a rest, I think. They're probably just worn out, leaving you flat. I sometimes like to think of it that way. Are you exhausted, too?

I will be eager to hear of the results of your coclear treatment. Fingers crossed bigtime here.

Seaturtle

Its ok. I was going to be put on clonazepam but I'm already on 4mg of ativan and he said that he didn't want to make the switch yet. I have absent seizures as well and ativan is a way of treating them. So far the ativan is working but as you know dreams I'll be seeing the neurologist and they want to assess me to see whether I'm still having them. And if I'm not having them I'll be able to switch to the clonazepam. Personally I found that the clonazepam is way better than ativan to treat anxiety. My nurse when I was at the appointment also reccommended that I try paxil for my anxiety in the near future. I will definitly be starting that during my next appointment which is in three weeks.

I've also heard that Paxil is good for anxiety. Prozac is a good med for anxiety as well. I take Prozac for bipolar depression, but I've found that it also helps reduce the anxiety I feel during a PTSD flashback.
