Lamictal makes me SO thirsty!

I've been on Lamictal for a couple of years now to treat bipolar disorder. I'm currently taking 400 mg- I keep having to up the dose. I also just started taking Seraquel, currently a pretty small dose, 25-75 mg, depending on how much I feel like taking that particular day! Anyways, Lamictal makes me unbearably thirsty. It has since I started the medication, but when I first started it I was just so glad that something finally helped that I didn't care about the thirst. Now that things are better, I'm getting really irritated with the constant thirst. I really, really, really don't want to go off the Lamictal as it's the only thing that works for me, but the thirst just keeps getting more and more annoying. I drink water until I feel like I'm going to be sick and am still thirsty! I've been known to drain 8 big glasses of water in an hour- sometimes more! So, if anyone has advice on how to fix this problem, I would really appreciate it!

Re: Lamictal makes me SO thirsty!

I don't know what to suggest except to let your pdoc know. Have you mentioned this to them?

Re: Lamictal makes me SO thirsty!

Have you been checked for diabetes? Extreme thirst can be a sign, and it's always possible the onset coincided with begining the lamictal. You should discuss this with your pdoc, because seroquel can cause blood sugar issues.

Re: Lamictal makes me SO thirsty!

Bunnylover brought up a good point. Many mood stabilizers and antipsychotics can cause diabetes and one of the symptoms of diabetes is extreme thirst. When I took Risperdal for 2 years, I was considered pre-diabetic until I ended up losing 30 pounds due to several depressive episodes. I would suggest that you see your GP and pdoc to discuss this further.

Re: Lamictal makes me SO thirsty!

I'm at a loss I've been on Lamictal for over a year and a half and I'm just the opposite I find myself barely drinking 2 or 3 full glasses of liquied a day, I have to remind myself to eat or drink. I would definitely mention this to your pdoc and then follow the advice of the other posters and have a full blood work up with your GP just to have everything else checked out.
