hi im new here and need a bit of help thanks - Bipolar Disorder Message Board

hi iv just been told by a doctor that she is certain i have bipolar disorder i was in there a long time and she was asking me so many questions anyway she wants me 2 go see a shrink coz she doesnt want to do half a job and so she sent me home with lexapro but since iv been on it i cant sleep much everyday i feel like i have so much energy even tho im not sleeping much i can't sit still very long without moving i feel really energetic and im not hungry i hardy eat anything now. i know antidepressants dont work straight away but its just starting to kick in now not wen i was first taking it, has anyone else felt like this on lexapro? thanks to anyone who helps

I took lexapro for 3 days once and stopped. I felt like my muscles all over were bursting. Since you're bipolar and have lots of energy you might be in a manic stage. I can't diagnose you and will not but hurry up and go to the psychiatrist, he/she will get you the meds you need. It won't be just you get the right meds the first time, it'll be a process to see which ones are best for you with least shown side effects.

Ah yes, very very wise to go see a psychiatrist. If she's so certain you have bipolar, she shouldn't of started you on an antidepressant alone. It seems it may be causing you mania. Do you feel your thoughts all over the place and racing speech, high energy, moving from task to task...?

BipolarPrincess is right, the lexapro might be causing some mania in you. I would call your doctor back.

I agree with BipolarPrincess. Anti-depressants like Lexapro can cause mania in people who have bipolar if they are not taken with one or more mood stabilizers. I would definitely let your GP know this and inform your pdoc of your current manic state.
