Coil removed - Birth Control Message Board

Hi There,

When my girlfriend had her coil removed (after 3 years) and another one installed, she was told that she would have to book a second appointment with the doctor to have the string cut and shortened on her new coil, and that he could not do it on the first appointment because there was too much blood and he could not see properly. My girlfriend then bled for over 2 weeks and as of yet has not been to the doctors to have the new coil string shortened. I just wanted to know if this is normal practice or whether there may be something she has felt she cannot tell me?

Hi there

Yes it is very common when you get a coil (IUD) placed that you make an appointment for the doctor to cut the strings. You cannot cut them on the first appt because the coil will move around and situate itself. It takes a little while for it to get into the place that it is going to stay at while you keep it in. The doctor usually makes an appointment for 2-3 weeks later. The strings are really no big deal they are just a way for you to check and make sure it is still in the right place.

I am a little concerned that there was alot of blood. When I got mine put in a year ago there was very very little blood and when i got it removed yesterday there was NO blood at all. IF she keeps bleeding I would call the doctor and let them know.

Thanks for your reply, I am just a bit concerned that maybe she feels she needs to hide something, she is not a nieve person at all!

She did not seem overly concerned at her period lasting for 2 weeks but she has said in the past that she is usually quite regular(5-7 days). Could she have become pregnant or something?!, the coil was in for over 3 years which was longer than the recommended time for it's model.

There is a chance. Does the Coil company have a website and if they do you might want to look at that. You also might want to call the doctor yourself if you are concerned. I know that if you are pregnant or get pregnant with the IUD sometimes it will cause you to miscarry or bleed. But if you are concerned I would call the doctor or nurse and ask them
