Please Help - Birth Control Message Board

When I was at my doctor last, I inquired about The Pill. He ended up giving me some samples.. Only problem is that my period never started after he gave me the samples, so I couldn't start taking it. Now I have been noticing that they are coming back, but they start off with this brown stuff. The Pill he gave me is for a Sunday start, and I'm just wondering is the brown stuff part of my period. Like just say I notice the brown stuff on a Saturday, can I start the pill the next day? Or do I have to wait for the actual menstral blood.

I'm one of those people that is over eager and didn't really follow instructions with the pill. I had only just finished another painful period when I got my first packet of pills and didn't want to wait who knows how long for my next period so I just started taking them from the first active pill in the strip. Which for mine was a Saturday. Did the same thing when I started taking them again after about a year off them.

Now I'm not sure if this is wise for all pills (I'm on a monophasic) but it worked for me. I think it just means you have to wait a little longer before you can stop using other contraception.

The brown stuff is part of your period... well, sort of. The delay plus the brown flow is a sign that your hormones are screwed up (don't panic -- it's probably just a one-time event).

If this continues (or, more to the point, if this resumes when you go off of the BCPs some day), then you'll want to ask your doctor to run a series of hormone tests.

It could also mean an ectopic pregnancy, but assuming that you don't have any low-ab/pelvic pain, then that is not very likely.
