Question 17 year old on Depo...

Hello, my name is Katie....I have been on the depo shot for about 2 years. I have heard so many horrible things about the shot and about women being unable to become pregnant for years after their last shot. I was wondering if I would have the same problem. I have talked with my mom about not taking the shot anymore because I have heard so many bad things about it and she told me that I could become pregnant as soon as it wore off.....I explained to her about everybodys experience and about not being able to get pregnant and she said that that wouldn't happen to me....That I would get pregnant as soon as it wore off.....So I would like to know if I discontinued the shot if I would have problems getting pregnant? Thanks! Oh and I don't plan on having a baby any time soon I just wanna get off the shot and try another form of Birthcontrol. Thanks

Re: 17 year old on Depo...

Depo can be a tricky one. There are women who have been on it and never have a problem with it even after they are off it. Then you have women like me who had no problems health/fertility wise until after Depo. Granted I had a whole host of problems while on Depo it wasnt until after that the most heart breaking one came into light. I cant even begin to describe the guilt, pain, and saddness that surrounded me becuase I made the wrong choice in birth control. Even now I have times that it hits me.
You can search the boards, such as this one,the women's health board and probably a few others liek the sex boards and find other posters who have had problems during and after Depo. You can also find other stuff online about it. Have you mom read over the stuff that you find. Then ask her if she wants to keep telling you it is going to be ok after you stop Depo. Heck you can even give her a list of the side effects and let her see what it is actually doing to yoru body right now. I do hope your doctor told you to take extra calicum because Depo does cause bone density loss.

Also if you want to change your birth control then by all means do so. It is your body and you can decide what form of bc you want to be on. Talk to your doctor and explain that you would prefer something else.

Re: 17 year old on Depo...

It depends on the individual. Some women are able to take Depo with no problems whatsoever. I, on the otherhand, wasn't so lucky. I was on Depo for 2 years and I have had nothing but problems since. I had no problems at all prior to Depo. I had successfully conceived twice prior to Depo, and I have periods that were like clockwork. I never skipped a period in my life.........they were never even late! Then I went on Depo. I stayed on it for 2 years. I got off of it to have another child. Well, that didn't come easily. My period hadn't returned after being off of the shot for a year and a half. So, I went to a specialist and was put on Clomid to assist in my conception. During my months of Clomid, that is the only time I had a period. I was on Clomid for 4 months, and I did conceive. After my son was born, I thought maybe I would go back to normal and start having my periods. Well, I didn't. I did not get my first non-induced period until 5 years after my last Depo injection. It has been 8 years since I stopped using Depo, and to this day, I only get about 4, maybe 5 periods each year. Infertility is only 1 of the problems that I experienced. There are many other problems that I have experienced as well.

I never had any problems til Depo. You won't know if you will have the same problems until you get off of it. It is a 50/50 chance. Your mother shouldn't be so quick to assume that everything will be just fine for you, because there is no guarantee that will be the case. I would consider switching to another form of bc.
