My mother and my birthcontrol...... - Birth Control Message Board

Hello,
Ok here is my situation....I'm 17 and I want to switch to another form of birthcontrol.... But my mother says there is no way I'm switching to the patch or pill......Now does my mother get to make the final decision on what birthcontrol i get to use? And my next shot is November 22 three months after that Is when I'm suppose to go again but I'll be 18....Can I decide for myself if I wan't to discontinue with birthcontrol after I'm 18? My mother told me that after I'm 18 im no longer on her medical insurance unless im a student but I'm homeschooled...I just want to make sure that once I'm 18 I can decide for myself if I want to continue with birthcontrol??? Thanks!

That's up to you and your mom. Is there a reason why you want to change? Is there a reason why she don't want to you change? I would talk to your mom about it, and talk to your doctor about it. Maybe your doctor can talk to your mom and help her to see your point of view. What it comes down to is it is YOUR body, and you can do as you please with your health. Are you going to college? that is what the insurance will look at as to your being in school. If not, then you will be off your parents' insurance (probably) and you can get your b/c another way (your own insurance, health dept ect) so it will be only up to you.

When you are 18, there is nothing that your mother can say or do. Most likely, your mother wouldn't even be able to consult with your doctor for anything (since you won't be a minor) due to privacy acts.

You are doing the right thing by switching to another form of b/c because that shot is horrible.

Well I'm on the Depo shot.....I have heard so many horrible things about it and It's scared me.....I also have alot of hairloss and I have gained a total of 60 pounds while on it..(I have only lost 20 of it) Just knowing that so many people hate it and have had so many problems trying to get pregnant....I with no problem in the future. And If when I'm 18 its my decision if I want birthcontrol or not then I would like to feel better about switching without my mother having a say in it!...Thanks very much!

Just curious, but why is your mother so adamant that you stay on Depo and not go to the pill or the patch?
