Back-Up Pack?

I've read alot of people on this board advising to always have another pack of BCPs on hand in case anything happens to your current pack. Since I'm a college student and I have to use my pharmacy at home, I asked my pharmacist if he could give me two packs instead of just 1 since I go away to school and so that I could have a backup pack. He refused and said that isn't allowed (although my refill is for a year). How can I get an extra pack to keep on hand?

PS - I think the Kariva is making me a little more emotional, b/c I almost started crying when he said he couldn't do it! Hahaha

Re: Back-Up Pack?

Your doctor can write the prescription for them to give you 3 packs at a time. And I would think the pharmacy could call the doctor to have it changed that way. The problem is most insurance companies will only cover 1 pack at a time. So when I get a new prescription, for the first couple of packs I get my refill on day 1 of the placebo week (the earliest my insurance will allow) and I keep doing it that early until I have an extra pack. Hope that makes sense

Re: Back-Up Pack?

yeah I get 3 packs at a time. It actually works out good cause I pay the same copay. I get 3 packs for $15.00. The pharmacist can't do it because your insurance company won't allow it unless it is written by the doctor that way. Another thing you could do is ask the doc for a couple free samples...my doctor has done this when I wanted to skip a period and needed an extra pack.

Re: Back-Up Pack?

thanks for the responses - I will def get my Dr. to change my prescription so that I can get 3 at a time. Do you think his office would carry samples of a generic pill? I don't really know how that works with the whole generic thing. Thanks again for the info!

Re: Back-Up Pack?

I can only get one pack every 28 days as well because my insurance company made it's policy that way. I even tried having my doctor right me a prescription for 2 at a time but the insurance covered only one pack.

I don't think your doctor will have the generic on hand. They usually only carry the name brand (which would be Mircette) in the office.
