Unhappy DEPO - Does it really make "it" stop?

With the Depo shot you take it once every three months, I've been taking it the last six months and recently stopped. Why?? I have a cousin that took the shot for a while and as the depo is supposed to make you period stop it made it stay for about six months. I've been off the shot since November when I was supposed to go get another one. But I didn't because the same side effects she was haveing, I'm having. One of hers is that she can't have children due to problems and the removal of an ovary. Doctor's said that the reason behind it could be because of the BC she was taking. Is this something that I should be concerend about as well??

Re: DEPO - Does it really make "it" stop?

I know that Depo can make your period stop or it can make you have a period for longer than a month..and that if you go off Depo then you will be unfertile for about 12-18 months.

I do believe that she could possibly still have children if she has the other ovary..and if I'm wrong about this somebody please correct me..But I believe this is true.

Re: DEPO - Does it really make "it" stop?

I decided to delete my post b/c I mis-spoke about infertility. The words I used were incorrect and I want to pass on my apologies if anyone was offended. I have decided to do some research and may repost.

Exclamation Re: DEPO - Does it really make "it" stop?

While I didn't know that you could become infertile for 12 - 18 months (which can be a good thing) some side effects from my experience to help anyone who is taking the depo into consideration. I had to go to the doctor who recommended me to a neurologist for chronic headachs (migraine tyoe), the back pain (felt like I was 80 not 18) was worse then when I wasn't on bc at all, I always had cramps (sharp but then they'd go away after a while) and I had a loss of appetite, since I havn't taken he shot I've been eating like a cow and even on days that I don't and eat like I used to (which is more then when I eat like a cow) I'm still gaining unwanted weight. I had been dieing to gain a little just not as much as I have and I really would have rathered it gone somewhere other then my behind!! Also just keep in mind that all body types are completely different I have a friend that's been on the shot for two years and she loves it with no problems at all. I think I just got the short end of the stick on this one. Just becareful and make sure you fully research your choice of bc before making a decision, and don't go for the "popular" method whatever that may be!! Ya'll have a good one peaceout!!

Re: DEPO - Does it really make "it" stop?

Everyone's body really is different, but I was on depo for about 3 years and it did stop my periods. The only problem was that I've been off it for 2 years and haven't gotten back to a normal cycle yet! I usually still don't get periods and I'm having problems getting pregnant. I've only been trying to get pregnant since July 2004, but it's really hard without a period!!! I'm currently working with my doctor to get my cycle back on track. My advice is to only go on depo if you never want to get pregnant.
