Birth Control and High Blood Pressure - Birth Control Message Board

I am 26 and have high bp...have had it since I was young and am taking medicine to control it. I want to try bc and was wondering what would be a good choice. The mini pill, regular pill, or another method. How is the copper ring? Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks

I would like to know this info as well.... I too have had high bp before.

It's definately important to discuss this matter with your physician. Birth control can cause high blood pressure. It's a side affect of all hormonal birth control methods, so the potential to cause problems is there.

Whatever method you and your doctor choose, be sure to keep active check on your blood pressure, to make sure that the hormones aren't making it worse.

I was having terrible high blood pressure and the doctors immediately took me off my birth control pill. After the pill got out of my system my blood pressure returned to normal. I had been on the pill for years without any problems then all of a sudden I couldnt handle them anymore.

i was going to start the pill but they said my bp was too high too, but i have no risk factors for high bp. it turned out that it would only be high when i was at the doctors. i routinely went to walmart to check mine on my own and they were a lot lower readings. (perhaps this is your problem too?)
if you are borderline, try adding a calcium/magnesium supplement and/or a garlic supplement. they are supposed to lower bp over time. and garlic is supposed to reduce clots over time too. and to my knowledge they dont interact with birth control.

now im on nuvaring, and my bp hasnt increased (nuvaring has the lowest level of estrogen - lower than the patch or ortho tri cyclen low.. )
