Having a hard time with mirena

My mirena insertion experience was horrid. I just had it in three days ago. I've got a tattoo and piercing and neither compared with the pain of insertion. I cried, fainted and threw up right there in the room. I was terribly embarassed. The assistant had just reassured me about how she had hers put in on her lunch break. My mom had one of the copper ones inserted years ago and said she didn't feel a thing. For the next day, cramps were unbearable. I sat in a hot bath and didn't want to get out. I still have crampiness and general "blahs," but thankfully it's getting a little better. I'm still taking way more ibuprofen than I'd like to in order to keep the pain under control.

I don't want to scare anyone from mirena. Loads of people seem to have absolutely no problem with it right from the getgo. I just want to know if anyone out there has had similar pain and how long it lasted. I honestly didn't expect this thing to take me out of commission for days. I'm normally very tolerant of pain and feel so babyish for whining about this, but it definitely was and continues to be one of the most painful experiences I've had.

Re: Having a hard time with mirena

I got mine over a week ago but it was not painful for me at all maybe one or two lil cramps while they did it but that was it and no cramping since. I spotted for a few days then started bleeding again and im still bleeding i dont like this part of it but i guess i can live with it. I had some nausea the first few days and dizziness but it seems to be better now, sorry u had such a hard time, hopefully things will get better for you

Re: Having a hard time with mirena

crayzechick,
Sorry to hear about your awful experience. The same thing happened when I get my copper one inserted. Well, I kept my gorge down, but the pain had me bedridden for a few days. Thought I had been skewered, hurt way worse than getting my nipples pierced .

Just take it easy, as the weeks go by it does get a whole lot better, with the mirena you probably won't know you even have it. Conversely, if the pain doesn't start getting better or gets any worse, you may want to prod your GYN/NP for an ultrasound to check the placement of the IUD. Regards.

Re: Having a hard time with mirena

my insertion was the worst pain i have ever felt in my life. my c-section was a piece of cake compared to getting my iud! afterwards i was fine, had very little cramping and no bleeding. then a week later i started having some very excrutiating sharp pains for a few days. they were so sharp and painful they would knock me to the floor. but they eventually went away. it has now been two months since i've had mirena inserted and i have no problems whatsoever pain-wise.

Re: Having a hard time with mirena

I went to this message board to find out if others have had the pain with the IUD that I am having. It has been 3 weeks since I had mine inserted, I was not informed that it would be horribly painful, and I have had pain ever since. No bleeding at all for me, but the pain that knocks you to the floor like others have described. I went back to my doctor after 3 weeks because of the severe pain, and pain during and after sex (which the Mirena IUD pamphlet says there should not be pain) and had an ultrasound done. The results say it is in the proper place, but I have extremely sharp pain in my abdomin, and other areas - even sharp pains shooting through my arm to my fingertips. It is very scary and I wonder when it is going to go away. My doctor offered to remove it, but after the investment that I made in it, I don't want to do that IF this pain is going to go away. We also cannot locate the strings, this concerns me too.

Before I had the IUD put in, I thought it would be something I could do on my lunch hour and go back to work. Thank goodness I didn't, because I barely could drive myself home I was in so much pain. I screamed when it was "released" it hurt so badly and I thought I was going to be sick with the pain. That day and the next was full of pain that crippled you - I couldn't move and couldn't sleep. I have noticed now that I have a lot of pain after lifting things, bending, and doing anything physical. I also have had very painful bowel movements that resulted in these shooting pains for appx 6 hours afterward - making me afraid to eat anything also.

Can anyone tell me if this pain goes away? And when? If I knew it would go away I could better live with it, but it is sickening pain and sharp shooting pain that makes you sick. Sex is totally out of the question, as I hurt for days afterward and have to take prescription pain medication to cope.

Help, anyone?

Penny
