definitely not an IUD, which stands for intra-uterine-device. the nuvaring stays in the vagina, not the uterus.
IUD's last 5 or 10 years, depending on which one you get. and a gyno/doctor has to insert it for you. an IUD looks like a "T" shaped piece of plastic, or copper (depending on brand, etc). some IUD's dont release hormones - they mostly work by preventing implantation of a fertilized egg. Implantation is the medical definition of pregnancy. so it DOES prevent pregnancy, and medically speaking, does not cause an abortion.
Nuvarings are only used for 3 weeks. and you put them in yourself. its a flexible ring made of silicone, it looks like one of those jelly bracelets you might have had as a kid. they release estrogen and progestin, and prevent an egg from being released from the ovary -> no fertilization of the egg happens.
