Ortho-Evra, Mircette, and Ortho-Tri-Cyclen Questions

Was on patch for a year:

+'s were an extreme alleviation of HORRIBLE period cramps and very very very light predictable periods. Also obviously once a week.

-'s were nauseau with vomitting the first patch of the month and painful breast tenderness. Also, patches falling off quite a bit!

NP said hormones too high if I had all those negative side effects

Been on Mircette for about 7 months:

+'s no breast tenderness, or nauseau/vommitting

-'s Bad PMS, BAD cramps, heavier flo. <-This is hard to take! I'd rather just throw up once a month on the patch.

Question: Do you think that Ortho-Tri-Cyclen (same hormones as patch) would alleviate the PMS, cramps, period issues?

Well, first of all, OTC does not have the same hormones as the patch.

Ortho Evra is monophasic, which means 1 steady level of hormones every day. It releases 150mcg of progesterone (norelgestromin) and 20mcg of estradiol every day.

OTC, on the other hand, is triphasic, which means that every week has a different amount of hormones. It also has a completely different progesterone (norgestimate). OTC has the following combinations:
Week 1: 180mcg progesterone and 35mcg estradiol
Week 2: 215mcg progesterone and 35mcg estradiol
Week 3: 250mcg progesterone and 35mcg estradiol

As you see, the levels are much higher in the OTC, and as stated before, the progesterone is a different hormone.

If you'd like to try OTC, go for it, but certainly discuss it with your doctor. Since OTC has higher hormones than Mircette, there is a chance that your PMS symptoms won't be alleviated.

Thanks! That was pretty informative. I just seemed that when I was on higher/steadier levels on the patch it helped my previous PMS greatly, one of the big advantages of hormonal bc.
