Late/missed pill

How late can you take the pill and it still be effective? When exaclty is a pill considered missed? For example, I usually take my pill around 7-8PM, is it considered late or missed if I forget to take it at that time, but take it in the morning? Is it still working?

Read your pill packet. Many brands of birth control consider a pill "missed" when it is 12 hours late. Other brands consider a pill "missed" only after 2 pills in a row aren't taken on time.

Personally, I don't consider taking the pill 12 hours late "perfect use," therefore don't believe that you're 99.9% protected. However, I don't think that effectiveness is compromised that much, and pregnancy is still highly unlikely.

Read your package insert. It should tell you what constitutes as a "late" pill, and when a back-up method is necessary.

Re: Late/missed pill

This is my interpretation.
You are supposed to take one pill a day. That means 1 every 24 hours. Therefore, if you don't take it at the exact time you are supposed to, but within the next 24 hours, you are late. If you are more than 24 hours late, then you have missed it because by then you should be taking the next pill.

Doesn't your pill's instructions make a distinction? Have you read them? They are usually very clear in what they mean about a late or a missed pill.

Re: Late/missed pill

I read it. I just gives instructions on what to do if you "missed" a pill. That is why I am asking what the difference b/t missed and late.

Thanks.

Mine too. It talks all about what to do when you've missed a pill, but doesn't give a time frame in which to consider your pill missed.

As far as I am concerned 4+ hours late and I consider it missed.... I get nervous if I'm an hour past, ya know?

I went in for EC after missing a pill (12 hours late). The clinician told me that I shouldn't really worry, since I'd been taking my pill regularly prior to that one miss. That it wouldn't put me at as much risk than if I'd never been taking them on a schedule. She said she sees patients who take OCP in the morning, then at night the next day, and then the next afternoon, and that kind of dosing can really catch up, increasing risk for pregnancy especially after a pill is missed.
