Birth Control Question (for GF) - Birth Control Message Board

Not sure if this belongs here or in the pregnancy forum, but i'm posting on behalf of my girlfriend, who is 17 if the age is important to the question.

She just recently started taking birth control pills (Yasmin), and has been on them for about 2.5 months now. Unfortunately, some odd side affects have occured. She has some lumps in her breasts and they are extremely tender, swollen, and sore. The soreness started about 3 weeks ago, and the lumps came about 2 weeks after that. We and her gyno are assuming they have appeared due to the medication, but are not completely sure. She says they hurt when she moves suddenly, goes up stairs, or puts any pressure on them. They also seems to "deflate a little", as she calls it, and feel better around her period.

Her gyno who prescribed the medication told her to stay off caffeine for about 4 months and see if the pain/lumps go down, but there has been no change in about 20 days of her laying off chocolate/caffeine. No change in sensitivity or size of the lumps.

My question is: have any other females experienced this problem on yasmin, or any other birth control? If so, how long did the pain/lumps last, and what did you do to lessen the pain or make it disappear?

Hey Al2009,

Erm i'm really not sure what is happening with your girlfriend but i know when i went onto a birth control pills they changed me. I had a lot of things happen, light period, sore boobs, tiredness etc. Get your girlfriend to read the instructions and see what they see then get a appoitment to her doctor and talk to him more bout it. I'm not sure really what it is unless its a sympton of the pills.

Yeah, she's already had an apt with the gyno that gave her the pills, and she simply said to "stay off chocolate and caffeine for at least 4 months to see if the swelling/soreness go down".

She's been completely caffeine free for about 20 days now, and there hasn't been any change in the soreness. The only time it's changed was when she got her last period (shortly after the gyno told her to go off caffeine). They "deflated" and got a lot less painful. However shortly after her period ended, they returned to their sore/lumpy state.

I never heard about not having chocolate or caffine to make it go down. Never heard that lol. Has she read her pills instructions? I dont really know whats going on but i would get a 2nd opionion because its something.

Well, the side effects say that they may include breast tenderness, but it doesn't say anything about the lumps, and we're wondering if "tenderness" is just a simple way of saying "hurt like crazy".

We're both starting to get a little worried. She said she wouldn't be able to get back to the doctor for a while, but the symptoms still don't seem to be reducing at all.
