Oral contraceptives help moodiness? - Birth Control Message Board

i really need some help with answers from anyone who takes birthcontrol.

I am having severe PMS. For as long as I can remember my mood swings have been coming on for years just days before my period and can last up to a week. I will cry for no reasons, hate someone for no reason and be depressed all the time. But a few days after my period starts then those symptoms starts to go away. This is really affecting relationships with people in my life. I am currently on Effexor for my anxiety which I think really has more to do with my PMS or PMDD. I have taken the patch before but i never felt much of a mood change or at least recognized a difference.
I heard that oral contraceptives can really help but I'm scared since my doctor says I am hormonaly sensitive.
Has anyone noticed a great mood change in taking oral contraceptives?

My mood has always been negatively affected by the pill.

I always thought I suffered bad mood swings on BC but given the option of being moody or pregnant ...... I chose moody.

I recently gave up with BC after 16 years on it to try and concieve. Moody does n't even come into it now ! I can be such a *****, there's no point in holding back words, even if they are hurtfull. I am overly honest now !

BC is different for everyone and there are loads you can try. Its just trial and error until you find one that works and suits your own indiviadul body. As for the PMS, there is loads you can do to "help" with it. Try an internet search and see what is practical for yourself and give it a try. You may find you get PMS whether you are on BC or not and different BC pills can also help or make matters work.

Hi there,
I took tri-cyclen for over a year and everything was fine with respect to my moods and such. I switched because it caused me to have spotting during the third week when the amount of progestrin (sp?) was not enough ( i think )
I was put on Triquilar (I'm Canadian, by the way, if you have not heard of that particular pill for any reason) and from the week i began taking it until last month when i stopped (about 6 or 7 months total) my mood swings were beyond my control. I felt like I had bi-polar disorder. One minute i felt on top of the world and the next i would feel so down that i would be crying or just getting so mad at someone for virtually nothing. I went to the doctor and explained all that, (and also the fact that i had a lump in my breast caused from too much estrogen) and we decided that i would switch to Alesse. I've only been on Alesse for a month, but so far so good. Honestly, I'm back to myself.
I would not recommend Triquilar, and in fact i wouldn't recommend the pill for any help with moods...
I suppose this wasn't much help, but just a little anecdote, i guess.
