Desperate for help - Birth Control Message Board

Here's my bcp history in a nutshell...

Started on OrthoTricyclen 4 years ago when I was 18. Did well with it, no problems. Took it for about 2 1/2 years.

My obgyn wanted me to try Ortho LO when it came out. The whole year I was on it I would always bleed during sex if the sex took place the week before my period. I finally told my obgyn about it and he switched me back to Trinessa (generic of OrthoTricyclen).

In April of this year I asked him to switch me because I was becoming really depressed and crying easily and thought it could be due to the pill. He put me on Yasmin. I took it for the months of May and June. In June my "problem" came back and I bled during sex a week before my period.

I didn't want to deal with that bleeding again so I started taking Trinessa again in July. Had sex July 4th, everything was fine. Period came July 19-24 like it should've...had sex the 29th, it was fine....2 days later spotted a little bit for a day (figured it was breakthrough bleeding since it's only my 2nd month of being on Trinessa again). Then I had sex last night and I bled during it. Went to the bathroom and wiped, the bleeding then stopped.

I went to my doctor today. He seems to still think it is hormone related. He told me to take one more month of Trinessa and see what happens next month. I'm really just terrified it is something like cervical cancer even though my last pap smear in Oct. was normal. The obgyn says if it was cervix related the blood would be brown and it would start right after sex. It does start during sex but it's usually red or pink in color. Please someone, anyone, help me understand why this is happening to me.

since you had been doing fine on the trinessa when you first started it it is probably just all the switiching around that is affecting your hormones. it doesnt sound like anything related to cervical cancer, especially since you had a clear pap test. has your doctor examined your cervix for anything abnormal that could explain the bleeding after sex? its probably just hormonal and with more time for your body to adjust you should be fine. hope that helps

No, he hasn't really done anything since he seems to believe it is pill related. He told me if I have the bleeding again next month then call him and he's going to switch me to Ovcon. I really don't want to switch again though. If it doesn't work this time I think I'm going to go off of bcp's completely and have him examine this further. I don't know what else to do. But I've been thinking...the bleeding a I had a few nights ago during sex was different than before...it wasn't a whole lot...like it usually is right before my period. I think I have just gotten myself so worked up about this and I'm so scared every time I have sex that maybe there just wasn't enough lubrication last time. Because I had sex twice last week, just days apart. The first time I had no problems and the second time I did. It just doesn't make sense.

After reading through other posts on the board now I'm thinking maybe it is a cervical erosion? I was on OrthoTricyclen for a few years, and apparently high dosages of estrogen are the cause of these erosions. Ugh, I don't know...my doctor never mentioned that as a possibility.
