| Re: Birth Control for men
I've been hearing about this for a while now. I went off the pill last March and DH & I were hearing about this then.
First, I've got to wonder about the demand for men's hormonal BC. Women in today's society seem to believe that BC is their responsibility and men seem to believe the same. Just this board as an example, The Birth Control Board; how many men do you see posting here? With few exceptions, condoms are synonomous with STD prevention; the pill, shot and ring are synonomous with pregnancy prevention.
Second, hormones screw around with our bodies something fierce. This is proven science. They affect our weight, our moods, our skin, our energy levels and our sex drives. Would men be so quick to put such a thing in their bodies when it's so accepted -- and so often expected -- that BC is a woman's responsibility?
On the other hand, pharma is making great strides to ensure all men's penises are in wonderful working order. I know that if DH takes any antidepressant med, anti-anxiety med, blood pressure med, cholesterol med or diabetic med, his penis won't work right, but this is known, accepted and DH can speak to his doctor and take another pill to get his penis working again. This is drilled into my head nightly every seven to eight minutes during primetime television. Yet, I see the commercials for the pill or ring on the nightly tv, I see women doing cartwheels and talking about how carefree it is being on hormonal BC meds. I never see a woman looking into the camera talking about how hormonal BC can make a woman's vagina dry up or lose her libido.
My point being: Pharma and society are much more prepared for and accepting of men's sexual dysfunction due to medications than they are of women's sexual dysfunction (a major side effect of synthetic hormones). Maybe your brethren will accept this new form of BC since they know pharma is working so hard for them.
