Blood Clot? On Seasonique

I'm hoping that if I post this that SOMEONE can help me with this. My friend today had what would normally be called a blood clot, but she showed it to me (saved it to show her dr., whom said they didn't need to see it) - it not only had a blood clot, but also had something on else that looked more like maybe tissue? But I said it looked like a little umbilical cord. But she is/ nor was she pregnant. (her dr. had her take a test, which came out negative). So this wasn't a miscarriage. It was probably 3 inches in length, and about 1/4 inch in diameter. Very weird. She has been on the birth control Seasonique for 6 weeks now, never missing a pill.
Is there somone out there that may have had a similar experience or know of someone who has, would be a great help!
Thanks.

Re: Blood Clot? On Seasonique

When you hear about blood clots while on the pill, it's referring to internal blood clots inside the body which can potentially travel to the lungs and cause very serious complications.

The type of clot you're referring to is really just the uterine lining being flushed as it always is during the menstrual cycle. I personally found that I had worse clots while on the pill than I have since I quit.

Another thing that can cause a lot of clots being passed with the period is something like polyps, cysts or fibroids. If it becomes very bothersome, it's worth it to get a vaginal ultrasound to make sure the uterus is clear. Endometriosis can also cause a lot of clots to be passed with the period, as well.

I think it's important to distinguish between the type of clots that are the very serious type that can be potentially deadly (the internal deep vein type) and the regular clots that are typically passed with menstrual blood. It's a big difference! One is potentially deadly and the other is very typical.

Re: Blood Clot? On Seasonique

Can you maybe explain what you pictured when she said "blood clot"? This tissue that was lost, kindof looked similar to raw fat, from meat. Sounds gross, but best description. While only one period had been missed, sure seems like a lot of lining to have lost. 2 seperate masses, about an hour and a half apart. Both whitish in color, while one was not saved, the other was, and it had a few hard areas in it. Very confused.

Re: Blood Clot? On Seasonique

I think it's very possible that some tissue came along with the menstrual blood and caused the clot to look that way. That is very typical for someone who is on the pill. But also, something like a polyp would cause pretty big clots as well. If it's really a problem, then I don't see why she wouldn't just go to see the doctor and get an ultrasound done?

The type of blood clots they are referring to when they talk about it with Birth Control Pills are a form of DVT, Deep Vein Thrombosis. Internal blood clots. It doesn't have anything to do with the clots that are passed with the period flow. That is an entirely different thing all together.

Re: Blood Clot? On Seasonique

I have an ultrasound scheduled for Wednesday. Again, I think the word blood clot is the wrong word. This was definatley NOT a clot. It was tissue of some sort. It had a blood clot attached to it, but by no means was this a clot.

The situation started Monday, with spotting. By Wednesday night, had the two tissue things, and since Friday have been bleeding very heavily. This would have been my 6th week on the pill, missing only one period. I have stopped taking it. My doctor is sending the tissue to pathology.
