When can I start the birth control? - Birth Control Message Board

Ok, so I have a question. I got off of the NuvaRing 3 months ago, because I just couldn't afford it. Well, I was switching to Alesse. The whole reason I am on bc is because of my irregualr periods. I am a virgin, so couldn't possibly be pregnant. Well, I was told to start the Alesse the first Sunday after I started my period, but I haven't had my period in three months. I do get horrible, miserable cramps though, which I think is from having PCOS. I am going to be asking a GYN at Mayo when I go back Aug 27 if I may have endometriosis. Well, my question is, can I start the bc before I start my period? Is it okay? I just don't want to ruin my chance of having children later on down the road, and the GYN told me that not having my period would cause my uterus lining to thicken too much (as I was 4 months into a period that lasted 6 months straight, really heavy, and my uterus lining was 2 cm thick (which I don't know what normal is, but he said that that was way to thick)). What to do about starting my period? The cramps are so bad, I just want to get the period over with so it can stop. Thanks!!

The reasoning behind starting the pill when you get your period is at that time your hormones are at their lowest. If I were you, I wouldn't start the pills just yet, it could make things worse IMO. Wait and see what the gyn says.

OK, thanks. Yeah, I do only have a week left before going to the Mayo clinic, so that is good. I see a GYN while I am there.
