21 vs 24 days of active pills

First time on the pill. My Dr. game me a two-month supply of Loestrin 24 FE to try, but a Rx for Microgestin (cheaper for generic). I like the 24 days of active pills for the shorter period (which I haven't been able to 'enjoy' yet, as I haven't been using it for three months yet. I had 'bleeding' for 11 days last month. Nothing heavy, but just inconvenient).
My question is this: with Microgestin having the normal 21 days of active pills and the seven days of sugar pills (or whatever they are), what does that do to the length and severity of one's period? Generally, of course, as we are all different.

Finally, do you really HAVE to take the extra pills? What do they even do? Are they just reminder pills? Do they serve any other purpose besides that?

Thanks.

Re: 21 vs 24 days of active pills

I take a 21 day active pill birth control and my period last only 4 or 5 days. I have also noticed that my period is lighter.

As for those inactive pills, they are just reminder pills that keep you in the routine of taking your birth control at the same time.

Hope this helps
Good luck

Re: 21 vs 24 days of active pills

Thanks, IrishPrincess.

I actually spoke to my Dr's nurse today (no internet access yesterday) and she said, according to a nurse practitioner, my period would probably be the same as it was before I was on the pill. Hopefully it'll be less and lighter, like yours. One can only hope. They're so darn annoying and inconvenient.

Thanks.
