Talking Just got birth control when should I start taking it?

Ok well I got birth control last week. I am only 17 and have it. I am not sexually active and do not plan on being for a while. But my boyfriend is coming out from England this Ocotber. So I have it just incase. Well my period isn't until next month (I already had it this moth).

Well I am wondering when I should start taking it.
Next month to get my system use to it??
Wait maybe a month before October??
I am confused on what I should do.

UKlover:

I would start your birth control next month with your period. You never know when it might not agree with you and you will have to try others to find the right one for you.

There are two options for starting it:
(1) You can be a Sunday starter. That means that you start it the Sunday after your period starts. It doesn't matter if you are still having your period, once that Sunday comes around after it starts you start taking your pills. If you start your period on a Sunday you still start the pack. Most packs are labeled to start on Sunday.

(2) You can be a Day 1 starter. This means that you start your pack on the first day of your period. If your period starts on Wednesday you start your pack on Wednesday. If your period starts on Monday you start your pack on Monday. I am sure you get what I am saying. Since most packs start on Sunday they will give you stickers with the days of the week to label your pack if you choose to be a Day 1 starter.

Also, read the information that comes your birth control to learn more about it.

Hope I was of some help
KD

I'm just curious, did the doctor just throw the pills at you without explaining anything about when/how to take it, potential side effects, etc? I'm just wondering, because it seems like there are an awful lot of questions on here about when people should start taking the pill, when in fact that's the most BASIC instruction that a doctor should provide when prescribing to a patient for the first time. But additionally, the pill comes with instructions, which you should read and which will tell you how to start taking it correctly.

Re: Just got birth control when should I start taking it?

From what my GYNO says you can take it the way described in this thread or you can start it immediatly however you will NOT be protected for the first full pack so it really depends. I suggest calling your Dr. and asking what is right for you or as also stated read the instructions =)

Re: Just got birth control when should I start taking it?

You have to start it either the day of your period or the Sunday after your period starts. If you start it any other time, then First you're not protected from pregnancy until who knows, probably a month. Secondly you're going to have problems with your cycle. And you should expect breakthrough bleeding and spotting for a while until your hormones figure out what's going on.

Re: Just got birth control when should I start taking it?

i started the pill last month and ever since then ive bled like crazy. its been really heavy, i started my pill on the first day of my period. im due on now but ive had no blood what so ever, so the cycle messes up no matter when you take it. Well in my case anyway, everyone is different.

If you take your pill on any other day your not protected for a week after, so use other methods of contraception until a week after you took it =]
