missing pills

So I've been taking birth control for the past 8 years. I never had a problem with them and I've been taking them daily at the same time every day. About 2 years ago, I started a bad habit of not remembering to take my pills every day. Then when I'd remember, I would take an extra pill that day.

Now I've been told from doctors that I must take one pill every day at the same time each day. If I forget to take one then I take 2 the next day. I have 3 days of being protected but if I forget to take 4 pills, four days in a row, then I must throw the pack away and start over while using condoms as the back up contraceptive.

I have been obeying these rules but for the past two years I haven't at all. Instead of taking one pill each day, I've been skipping 3 pills, three days in a row and on the third day I take 3 pills. It's not quite 4 days so I don't need to start over with a new pack. So for 3 days, I don't take any pills and then take the three at once. This has been a pattern I've been doing for the past two years.

I know this isn't the smartest way of taking birth control but I've been with the same guy for 3 years. I have been sexually active for 3 years, having sex 3-7+ times per week. 90% of the time, he ejaculates inside of me. My question is, am I really being protected this way? If I stay on the same pattern am I getting the full affects from birth control? Or am I just getting lucky? Another thought is could I be infertile? I am curious now. Please let me know what your thoughts are. Thanks.

Re: missing pills

I would say you are getting lucky however the chances of getting pregnant would be low anyway. You have been taking the pill for 8 years, your body is completely adjusted to the hormomes. I think even if you stopped the pill altogether it would take a few months for your body to stop reacting to the hormomes and allow pregnancy. But I guess the more you mess around with the pill times, the less adjusted your body may become and the chances will increase.

Re: missing pills

I disagree. The pill only has a half-life of a few days anyway, so for you to skip that many days in a row is most likely messing up your hormones big time. It doesn't matter how long you have been on the pill, what matters is how you actually take the pill. And you've been taking it completely wrong for such a long time, I'm surprised you haven't gotten pregnant yet.

Also, if you quit the pill, it's possible to ovulate right away for some women, depending on their body and how long it takes their ovaries to respond to being off the pill. You have no way of knowing how fertile you may be, so you might get pregnant right away.

What you need to understand about the pill is that it was designed to be taken once a day every day. There is a reason why the directions are written that way. Clinical trials were done with the pill to determine dose and effectiveness based on how it was taken. You're following a completely different dosing method, one which isn't even all that healthy.

If you aren't capable of taking it every day like you're supposed to, you really need to switch to something else. The shot, patch, ring, condoms, something else entirely. You're not doing your body any good by taking the pill this way. I can guarantee that the damage that you're doing is far worse than you'd imagine.

Yeah I know I should take them properly but for the past couple years if I take a pill daily, I feel sick to my stomach for the rest of the day. I used to not feel like that but I do now for the past two years I just feel sick. A couple times I've puked after taking them. Thats a big reason why I take them every few days so I'd feel sick only every few days instead of every day. But I'm not sure if the other methods are good for me. I've tried the shot and it made me gain a lot of weight quickly. I stopped taking it and went back to the pill. Plus I have two friends who both got pregnant while claiming to be on the shot. That's what both of them have said even though I read that the shot is just as affective as the pill. There is also the ring but my boyfriend does not want me to be on the ring. I've been on it before and a lot of times it falls out during sex and we just wouldn't notice and find it on the bed hours later. Plus he says it feels really weird and doesn't have faith in it at all. There is the patch but that is no longer available where I live because it has been quite the issue for some people. Then there are condoms which is what a lot of people agree on. But I don't trust condoms one bit. First of all, they hurt me. I get so dry and just find them to be painful. Second, I've had many condoms break on me. There has been a few times when I'd have sex, condom breaks and I'd go out and get Plan B. That night after taking the Plan B medication I'd have sex again and the condom would break a second night in a row. Condoms break constantly!! I've had to get Plan B probably over 20 times in my life which is not normal. I think most girls should need to take it 1-2 times in their life. I've asked my friends if they ever have problems with condoms breaking and its not common for most of them. It really looks like the pill is my best option.

Re: missing pills

If you're getting sick from taking your pill then change the time when you take it to right before you go to bed. I never took the pill during the day, because I thought it was stupid to subject myself to the nausea so early in the morning! If you take it before you go to bed instead, then by the time the nausea would have set in, you'd be asleep already.

I think you should try that first but taking it every day because you're seriously damaging your hormonal balance by taking it the way you are taking it. It's like you're shocking your system every time you triple up or whatever, because there's nothing for 3 days then bam, 3 pills, no wonder you feel sick! I got sick from Plan B the first time I took it because it's 2 pills at the same time, no wonder you'd get sick if you took 3!

About the condoms, they're not supposed to break that easily. Your bf must be buying the wrong size or he is putting them on wrong or they are expired. He has to learn which ones to buy and how to put them on right. I have been using nothing but condoms for over 3 years with no breakage. One time it slid off inside, about 2 years ago, but nothing happened as a result. My current guy knows exactly how to use them, so we have no problems. I really think that breakage only happens if there's a problem with how it was put on or the size. Trojans are not that great, try durex or something.
