Question Can I start my new birth control anytime or only after a period?

I took Ortho Tricyclen Lo for several years, and had to stop a few months while I changed to a cheaper brand (tri previfem) and since stopping I have not had a period. My periods before the pill were very irregular and I read it could take over a year to get a period again. Can I start the new pills anytime, say, this Sunday and be okay as long as we use backup protection for the first month?

I'm very annoyed and don't want to wait months and months to start my new pills. I am reading conflicting information and trying to contact my doctor to ask about it is an absolute nightmare, has anyone started the pill without their period? Thanks.
