4 Tips to Avoid Colds & Flu

Are you trying to avoid colds & flu this season? It is like the sound of nails dragging across a chalkboard—when that one guy in your office starts sneezing, coughing and blowing his nose. If you're lucky, he'll cover his mouth, but chances are that he won't wash his hands before touching just about everything in the office.

You don't have to become a paranoid freak about cold and flu germs, but you should be more aware of how they can invade your space. That sneezy guy may seem far away and harmless, but he can be the source of a lot of illness for the people in your office, on the elevator, the commuter train or any public place—especially those tightly enclosed spaces. Here are a few tips to avoid cold and flu bugs.

1. Boost Immunity to Avoid Colds & Flu

You can't control what other people do or don't do, but you can control your own body. When cold and flu season creeps around the corner, it's time to go on a mission to boost your immunity, which simply means that you make your body stronger and your system better able to fight off germs by boosting your health.

Certain foods like chicken soup or certain types of fruits and vegetables have been proven to help boost the immune system. Eat plenty of green leafy vegetables and fruits—they’re high in antioxidants that strengthen your body’s ability to fight off disease.

2. Disinfectant Wipes to Kill Flu Germs

When cold season arrives in the autumn, you can bet that germs are lying in wait on all the surfaces you come into contact with. That includes doorknobs, desks, touch screens and keyboards.

Carry a portable pack of disinfectant wipes everywhere you go. Put one in your hand before you turn the door knob or open the toilet seat cover. Wipe down your desk and keyboard every morning before you start work.

3. Wash Your Hands Frequently to Avoid Colds & Flu

Most importantly, wash your hands at every opportunity—especially after you’ve touched something that could have germs on it (or after you have shaken someone’s hand). Be sure to keep your hands away from your face until you can wash them, especially if you've been in the office or out and about touching lots of "shared" surfaces like elevator buttons, escalator rails, shopping cart handles, pens at the check-out counter, and the touch pad at the ATM. You don't want to unconsciously transfer any of those germs to your face when you rub your eye or scratch your nose!

Remember, you don't necessarily need to wash with antibacterial soap, as long as you wash well for at least 20 seconds to get rid of the germs.

4. Move Away from People Who Have a Cold!

One of the biggest reasons why people get colds and the flu is because they are too darn polite! If a guy who's sneezing, coughing and blowing his nose sits down next to you in a waiting room or on a bus, will you sit there for the whole ride? This is your health we're talking about here—don't be afraid to protect yourself even if it seems socially awkward. Get up and move immediately!

    May I add to number 1? Elderberries! A very popular, and effective, herbal cold remedies in Europe, now becoming more popular in the US.
    Elderberry Syrup Recipe
    - 1 cup fresh or 1/2 cup dried organic Elderberries (harvest blue or black, avoid poisonous reds)
    - 3 cups water
    - 1 cup raw local honey
    - 1 organic Cinnamon stick,
    - 3 organic Cloves,
    - organic Ginger (optional)
    Place berries, water, and spices in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer for 30 minutes. Smash the berries to release remaining juice and strain the mixture. Allow liquid to cool and stir in honey. Will last for 2-3 months stored in the fridge.
    Take a tablespoon daily to ward off illness and a teaspoon every 2-3 hours while sick. Not recommended for children under 2 due to the honey.

    I find it tragic that i even have to add this:
    3 grams vitamin C and 6000 IU vitamin D3 daily, or 6X a week.
    I have maintained the vit C protocol for more than 15 years now. I added the D about five years ago.

    Since then, not so much as a sniffle.

Supplements can be great, but we want to remind readers to check with your doctor before adding herbal and vitamin supplements to your wellness plan, as some people can experience side effects or negative interactions with other medications.
