whatever 'normal' is

Posted 08-25-2013 at 04:04 PM by Frumquist (GERD - Fundoplication surgery)

The doctor says to go ahead with a normal life but use common sense. I'm not sure that those things always go together. He said it looks like we hit a home run with the healing from the surgery and the disappearance of all of the symptoms that we thought 'might' have been associated with gerd. Symptoms including, coughing, throat, and sinus problems accompanying the burning, regurgitating, swallowing problems.
After the first of the year (6 months post-op) I'll go back for a barium swallow...

6 weeks post op

Posted 08-13-2013 at 07:28 PM by Frumquist (GERD - Fundoplication surgery)

Tomorrow I go see the surgeon who did the modified nissen 6 weeks ago. If I had it to do over again, YES, I would do it. I have not taken, or needed, any gerd-type meds. I don't need any pain meds from the surgery. Sure, I watch what I eat, I watch how fast I eat, and I chew stuff very well. Actually, the problem foods are thick starchy things and thick meats (like steak). I have NO problem with tomato-based stuff or spicy stuff. Yesterday and today I have had a beer with minor bloating. I know...

Wow! Time flies -- sorta. There continues to be improvement but a lifetime of bad eating habits are hard to change. I still haven't tried anything carbonated because I seem to get bloated too easily by doing stupid things like eating too fast or not chewing enough. 1 trick I have found is to take a sip of water with every mouthful of food. It helps break down the food better and reminds me to chew more. On those occasions that I try to swallow too much and it gets stuck, well, my wife is now used...

Still getting better. 3 days ago had my first post-op face-to-face appt. All of the steri strips were gone and the incisions had closed up nicely. Still a little tenderness in center abdomen above the navel, near the lowest incision. Probably nothing to worry about -- after all, the doc had shoved a camera and an air hose into that incision.
The best part is that they cleared me to try more foods. The suggested a "sloppy diet". Meat, pasta, well cooked vegetables as long as I eat...

Still improving but still tired. Like with any kind of surgery, there are up days and the other kind of days. I'm still staying pretty restrictive on the diet -- Boost, Ensure, juices and malt-o-meal. The malt-o-meal has extra protein if you add an egg while cooking it. It seems to stick with you a little longer, too. I find I'm getting hungrier and food smells are getting my attention a lot more. I'm still using the higher calorie, higher protein version of the drinks because I know I need that...
