Lost 4 pints of blood..why?

A while back, I got some flu like symptoms, which lead to dizzyness, I didnt think much of it till I started getting blurred vision. So then I went to the Emergency Room, they ran some tests. They came back saying my hemoglobin was a 3. So they admitted me to the hospital and gave me 4 pints of blood. I also lost some hair with this and they diagnosed me with a Iron Deficiency Anemia. The doctors here dont know why I lost 4 pints of blood, I would like to know, because I want to know if it will happen again. So if any of you have any ideas on why I lost so much blood your thoughts would be helpful.

Thanks Much

Did they do any tests other than a blood test? Usually when someone drops their hemoglobin like that, they do testing to find out if there is a gastric bleed of some kind. Did you have a heavy menstral period? Have you been having tarry smelly bowel movements?

Yeah, they did one of those colonoscopy tests, and that came out fine. I dont have heavy periods either.

Re: Lost 4 pints of blood..why?

having a Hb of 3 does not mean you have "lost" 4 pints of blood
Hb is low for three basic reasons - losing it via haemorrhage, blood being broken down (haemolysis) or not making enough (usually vitamin deficiencies or bone marrow problem)
