not a blood disorder exactly - but strange bruising.. advice is appreciated - Blood and Blood Vessel Message Board

I had some blood drawn at a lab last monday (the 6th)..

there weren't any problems, infact the girl that did the stick was quite good. However I bruised a LOT. It's changed from it's ugly purple color to a brownish/purple color, so it is healing - it's just going on 9 days, which seems like quite a while. I also notice a bruise on my hand - right in the middle on the outside - same arm as the blood draw. It's entirely possible I bumped my hand though, and just don't remember it. There's a bruise too on the same arm, on the inside, about 2-3 inches down from my wrist. I don't know if that's related or not either..

The bruising on the inside of my elbow happened the last time I had blood drawn too (about 7 weeks ago).

Do you think this is something that I should be concerned about? This didn't used to happen..

Are you on any type of blood thinners or do you take a lot of aspirin? If this is something out of the ordinary, I would mention it to your dr.

It's no more than some blood seeping under your skin from getting blood withdrawn, hence the bruising, so I wouldn't worry about it. It's happened to me on several occasions throughout my life too and many others I know.

hello , it sounds like you may have been infiltrated "to what degree Im not certain" a blood vessel at some point sounds like it was hit which created a hematoma underneath the skin " bleeding and then bruising".

Was there any mild swelling or sorness shortly after or a continued small amount of bleeding localized near the site of injection ?

Do you have veins in your arms that tend to roll when drawing blood and sometimes the return of blood takes longer to retrieve?

If you dont have any blood disorders or did you possibly drink heavy amounts of alcohol or caffeine or take large amts of acetaminophen" tylenol" or aspirin prior? If you feel it should be looked into further go see your doctor . Im one to always go with my gut instinct when it comes to me and medical issues.

If you feel healing is taking longer than normal or there is heat or pain by sites or any feeling of discomfort go see your doctor so he can either assist your discomforts or look into possible other testing if he feels needed.

Even if it is nothing and all is well your doctor may comfort your thoughts much quicker I bet than us here online..good luck to you hope ur feeling better.

It was sore afterwards yeah, most of the day.. it didn't swell noticeably though. No aspirin/tylenol/alcohol/caffeine that morning. I might have had a soda the day before the draw though (i had it done at 8am..)

The veins in my arms are sometimes difficult to find, but I don't think they roll or anything abnormal like that.

Hm. I was at my doctors office this monday, and she saw my arm but didn't say anything about it - then again I was there for another reason. I'll mention it to her when I see her in August if it happens again in 7 weeks when I get my next blood draw.
