Question High Iron levels and hypothyroid.. advice needed please..

Hi everyone. I'm new to this group (usually on the thyroid board!) so I'll take a minute to give y'all my story. I could use some input from anyone that might see anything here.. I'm a bit worried about all this.

I'm in the process now of trying to figure out what's going on with my health. I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism about 2 years ago and it's currently managed (thank goodness!). However despite STILL being super tired, back in October my doctor decided to run an iron test on me.

The results:
Iron: 152 ug (35-150)
Iron SAT: 57 ug (15-55)

I don't eat red meat much, I only drink occasionally (maybe a drink or two a month) and I'm not on any iron supplements. I'm careful with Vitamin C and actually drink tons of tea.

Since I get my blood drawn every 8 weeks or so for my thyroid, I asked her to test my iron again.

December's results:
Iron: 190 ug (35-150)

So in 8 weeks, my iron jumped up 40 points. *sigh* It just SEEMS like a lot, ya know? That test was done immediately after my period was over too...

My doctor saw this and suggested I see a GI specialist to get a liver biopsy (ugh! How much/painful are these things? ).

I know there's a chance it could be hemochromatosis, and while I realize this isn't a good way to check but nobody in my family has ever heard of it, let alone be diagnosed with it. We're all learning though. I'm trying to get in to see the liver specialist asap, but it's proving to be a bit challenging.

So anyway, I guess I'm looking for opinions and advice on the bloodwork and such. It seems quite odd and unsettling that my iron level would rise so much so quickly.

Please, and thank you

My story is very similar to yours.. Female with hypothyroidism and high iron levels. I don't take any supplements, and I don't really feel my diet is high in iron either. I've had a history of liver problems in the past (elevated enzymes) and liver disease does run in my family! I'll look into this some more. Keep me posted on your progress!

I have low iron but I know someone with hemochromatosis. He gives blood regularly to keep the iron levels down. I'm not sure if he has do take any medication for it. He lives a perfectly normal life though. I should add I don't know if the blood he gives is suitable for a bloodbank- I would assume not.

Re: High Iron levels and hypothyroid.. advice needed please..

Hi, everyone. I thought that I wuold weigh in on this subject. I am 25 and have hemochromatosis. I also have a family history of thryoid cancer. I currently have a goiter, but they don't seem to be concerned. Anyways, for my hemo... I give blood at the red cross every 56 days. That is as often as they will allow. My blood is very acceptable and desired. Us haveing high iron is not a problem for someone who is getting a transfusion. Since I can give blood so often that makes them happier. A thing to remember is that it is NOT a blood disorder. It is a genetic disorder that affect primarily your liver, joints, and migraines.

Hope alll goes well with everyone!!

I'am surprise you know already you have hemochromatosis. I have it too But much older. They say you ususlly do not know about this till menopause. Where I live you have to go to the hosiptal to have a phlebotomy. Does one of your parents have this. My daughter has not been tested let neither has my son. The test runs 600.00 dollars. Well good luck
