Ever heard of Cumadin Resistent - Blood and Blood Vessel Message Board

My son broke his leg and suffered a DVT that ended up in the lung. He has been on Lovenok and Cumadin for 14 days and has not responded. They keep upping his dosage and there is very little movement. He started with 5.0 mg and is no on 17.5mg and he has move from a 1.0 to a 1.4. They are going to put him on 20mg today. I understand the liver can provided the absorbion of the Cumadin but do they just keep going up and up with the dosage? I am not afraid of him bleeding because of the dosage as the dosage is not working. What I am afraid of is any side effects and why the dosage is so high and why there is not another med. His is so tired of the hospital and of the belly sticks someone/anyone any ideas.

I also have a DVT diagnosed in January. I am going through the Lovenox and Coumadin treatments without much luck so far with my INR being stable. I did talk to my Doctor yesterday and she did tell me that some people do have a resistance to Coumadin. Is he taking the generic (warfarin)? She said that sometimes because of how the warfarin is engineered that some people cant absorb and get benefit from the generic form and just may need to switch to the name brand (coumadin)...hope this was helpful..

I am so sorry abot your son. My husband was diag with many small embolisiuns last week in both lungs. They let him go home when his inr reached 1.5 and we have a nurse everyday come in to do the blood tests.He came home on Sat and on sunday was so ill with confusion the runns and vomiting the nurse came about the same time all this was happening and took his blood and the INR showed he went up to 3.5 and he was having a reaction to the shots and the coumiden plus the fast rise.He didn't have a shot that day or any pills and the next day the INR was down to 2. yesterday he took a 2.5 coumidan and today his INR was 2.1. This drug works so differently on everyone of us. If your son is taking the generic it has different fillers in it then the coumidan and that could be the cause. I was also told today that if my husband has another bad reaction there is another drug he can take.Maybe so in your sons case also even though his case is different then my husbands. Good luck.
