High Platelet count and donating

I'm new to this site and have just found out my platelets are around 700,000. I started donating platelets last month since they were so high and they are happy to have them. Has anyone else donated? It's an easy way to know what your count is as that determines whether you can donate or not. So far I have triple donated each time I've gone. The only weird thing I've seen so far is my platelets have been a greenish color instead of yellow. Not sure why but they've told me it could be hormone level.

Re: High Platelet count and donating

Hi,
I am also in west Michigan and have a bunch of questions for you! How much does the donation take your levels down? Do you donate in Kalamazoo? Are you on any medicine for the high platelets? Do you have a hemo? I go to West Michigan Cancer Center and see Dr. Rafi. Have you had a test for JAK2 mutation? Thanks for posting!

Re: High Platelet count and donating

I donate in Lansing as they are the only option besides Flint. The Red Cross is going to opening someplace in Kalamazoo in January (possibly at Borgess or Bronson). The platelets replace themselves within 48 hours so the numbers don't decrease. I have triple donated every time so far. I have my first appt. at WMCC next week with Dr. Heggie so I haven't had any tests done yet and am not taking any meds. I feel great other than daily headaches which I've had for the last 10 years

Hi I live in SW Michigan also and was wondering if the doctors suggested that you donate platelets or you just go on your own. I am on medication for ET and I don't think they would want mine. I was just curious. Thanks

Re: High Platelet count and donating

I asked my doctor and he told me that I could donate so I did. I donated this past weekend and my counts were over 800,000 so they (American Red Cross) won't let me donate anymore. I'm not sure if they will let you donate if you are on medication but am hoping that I can get straightened out and start again.
