Fatigue, weight loss, aches/pains & abnormal FBC?

Hi

I'm a 32 year old male who has been suffering from fatigue, tiredness and weakness for several months (at least 3 or 4). I've also been steadily losing weight but I'm not dieting (7+ pounds). I've been having weird aches & pains lately too. My bones & joints (knees and ankles) ache quite a lot, especially first thing in the morning. I've also been getting discomfort in my back on the left side (above my waist but below the rib cage).

I had some blood tests done recently (including a full blood count). It came back negative for diabetes & thyroid problems but abnormal for neutrophils, red blood count and lymphocytes. I don't have the actual numbers so I don't know whether they were lower or higher than expected. I've just had a follow up FBC 4 weeks after the first test. The results come back next week and I'm a bit worried.

What could cause my symptoms and abnormal blood test results?

What questions should I ask my doctor next week?

Many thanks in advance.

Jack

Hi Jack,
It's hard to know what may be the reason for your blood work being off until you see your doctor. I too have had very similar symptoms for the same length of time as you. The bloodwork I have had so far has been normal with the exception of an elevated serum protein. My platelet count is usually high normal or high because I had my spleen removed ten years ago. I have had more testing on that and will get the results from a hematologist on Tuesday. I am scared out of my mind. I recommend that you see a specialist as soon as possible, only to save you the anxiety of waiting for answers from your GP, who may end up sending you to a specialist anyway. You may have a virus or an infection of some sort. I wish I could tell you something that would make you feel better - I know that my fear about my own issues are eating me alive, and I don't wish that for anyone. So, first and foremost, see a specialist who can alleviate your worries and get to the bottom of it for you. I wish you all the best - Lily
