effects of donating blood

can donating blood for a long period of time effect blood counts such as platelets, hemocrit and iron.i have low iron ,very high platelets and a hemocrit level of anywhere between 45 and 50

chuck1220--Have you checked your Ferritin levels? Your answer is probably there, as ferritin would be considerably lowered by regular blood donation. If your other levels are showing iron deficiency, you are low in ferritin as well, and the end stage of the ferritin stores is (iron stored in bone marrow and organs) iron deficiency anemia. It takes years to deplete the iron stores, ferritin. This can cause the platelets to rise, mine were 462 when I was anemic. I don't understand your Hct value because in iron deficiency the H & H, RBC (sometimes), MCV, MCH, MCHC are LOW and RDW and platelets HIGH on the CBC. In the Iron Panel; the Serum iron is Low, the UIBC is High as is the TIBC and the % Sat is Low. I hope this helps a little. FLFLOWERGIRL
