Platelet fluctuations??

My sons labs have been all over the place. In a 10 day span his platelets have gone from 413 to 883 to 170. His wbc without illness was 25.3 now 8. He wasn't neutropenic before and now he is mildly with an ANC of 1400. His rbc is normal at 4 and now his hematocrit is low at 32. I'm glad his wbc count is down, but is it because of the new neutropenia? And is it normal for the platelets to jump all over the place like that? We have more tests pending from the hematologist, but the wait is killing me. He just turned one. I'm starting to think I need to stop worrying because nothing is ever consistent!
