Iron low and platelet count high

I was wondering if anyone has had this? I have been researching on the internet and what I have found is scaring me silly!!! My iron was 26 and my platelet count went from 483 up to 528 in a month!! I am so scared I have leukemia. I have a 9 month old daughter and the thought of getting sick and leaving her has me sick to my stomach. I don't go back to my hematologist until April b/c she wants to see if my iron levels go up after being on iron pills for 3 months. That is a LONG time to wait. Can anyone help?

Re: Iron low and platelet count high

Also, my WBC is a little high at 11.7 and my lymphocytes are high at 4.1. The lymphocyte % is 35.3. I am 33 y/o and a little overweight. Just wanted to add a few things!

Re: Iron low and platelet count high

Missy,
an increase from 483 to 528 is really not that big of a jump - your body could have that range in one day as platelet counts range during the day. I have ITP which is a problem with low platelets, but I had my spleen out and now my platelets range from the high 300's to 800's. An increased WBC count with an elevated platelet count could indicate an infection. A higher platelet count in and of itself won't hurt anything, and chances are they'll go down on your own. You could have a sinus infection or some infection that's driving everything up.

My hema doesn't worry unless my platelets go up to 800's and stay there.

Don't worry! Take care of yourself and get rest. I bet you'll be fine.

Hi
what was your ferritin and transferrin levels ?
Your platelets can be elevated with an iron deficieciency also your ferritin would be low and your transferrin high...

Re: Iron low and platelet count high

Hi Missy,
Im 23 yr old and going thru alot of what your are... It started back in 2009 and i still have no answers. My platelets and wbc have been high and I have low iron ive been on the pills since aug/sept 2009 and my results still come back low. Finally my doctor has decided to do a bone marrow biopsy which i have set for feb 2nd. I hope you get some answers and that the iron pills help with your low iron.
