Hematologist visit tomm - please tell me what to expect - Blood and Blood Vessel Message Board

I posted yest and this is what came out of my previous thread.

The one person who replied said my sx's aren't consistant w/polycythemia vera - but I wonder? My platelets have been high (highest being 528 and at the lowest 409). My H/H has been fairly consistant in the high normal range - the exception being now (Hct of 15.7 and Hgb of 46.3) and 4 years ago (Hct of 45.3 this was also when my platelets were @ their highest level).

So basically - this has been ongoing for about 4 years. I also have a noted increase in my total cholesterol (145 in 2006 and now 196). The funny thing is my diet has never been great - but I don't eat a lot of fried foods - so I cannot believe the change! I have never done much in the way exercise - I know that's bad and I need to change that I know!

I just don't know what to expect - I kind of am beginning to think it may be a waste of time! From the impression I am getting from others! I am only 36 yo and my PCP basically said she just thinks I am too young to have labs out of whack like this - that is why she is concerned.

IF UR worried about UR blood levels U deffinitely need to see the hematologist.THe doctor will probably have lots of questions for U and will probably stick UR finger and get a small blood sample to analyze. He should be able to tell U something before U leave his office;unless he wants a bone marrow sample. It will take about a week to get results on that. ANd the bone marrow biopsy is no big deal.I don't remeber U saying how U feel;general health.Polycythema makes U feel terribly and I want go into all of that.I hope U come out of the doctors office with a clean bill of health.
