Bruise on face calcified (calcified hematoma).. help!

My 15 yr old son received a sports injury to his face a few years back that became severely bruised, and it calcified into a large lump on his cheekbone, which is visible. The doctor terms it a "calcified hematoma" and doesn't seem to know much about treatment. Until our upcoming visit with a new doctor, I would like to find out as much as possible. Does anyone have experience with this, and what the removal procedure is? Any thoughts at all are appreciated.. thanks

Oh honey - get online and do as much research as you can. Also - look into larger research hospitals such as NIH (I visit there every year), Duke, John Hopkins, Shriners, or places like them.
Let us know how it goes.
Prayers being sent your way!

Re: Bruise on face calcified (calcified hematoma).. help!

Thank you for your kind words. I can't find much online.. it seems calcifications usually occur on places like shins and other bones that normally can get severe bruises. Not much info on how to remove them. Luckily, I live near several large medical centers in Massachusetts, and they are seeing him Tuesday. So far, the plan is to have him looked at by an orthopedist, who will work with a plastic surgeon to remove it (barring any unforseen problems). Thanks so much for your sweet reply, it's nice to know people care!

I'm glad you are going to see the "best" doctors in your area. I only know the best places in the southeast. But looks like your son is going to be in good hands.
I pray that all goes well for him.
Please post me when he's finished surgery and let me know he is back to his handsome self again (minus the calcified bruise).

hey dbon99,
Been thinking about your son and hoping that all has gone well for you over the holidays. I hope the specialists were able to give you both some hope on a treatment. Let us know how he's doing.

Re: Bruise on face calcified (calcified hematoma).. help!

Thanks so much for checking back. He will be getting a CAT scan next week so they can see what exactly it is, no worries though, the surgeon feels it may just be a soft tissue mass (capillaries and tissue that formed as the bruise healed). Then we evaluate how to remove it (thankfully, no cutting through his face.. probably a small incision through his mouth), depending on how soft and pliable it is. Seems like it may be easier than I thought it would be. Thanks again for your concern, I will pass your good wishes on to my son.

Re: Bruise on face calcified (calcified hematoma).. help!

Hello. I was searching on calcified hematomas and found your postings. How did your sons condition turn out? My brother in law was in a car accident and January and has been having shoulder pain. First they said it was fractured, then thought it was broken and then was told last week that he has a calcified hematoma. We have no idea what that means and what to do w/it. He is in quite a bit of pain at times. Did your son have his removed? Did the drs. have any other options? We were told that it takes care of itself over time, but not sure how accurate this dr. is. He is a general praticioner, not sure how much experience has w/this type of thing. Thank you for your help.

Re: Bruise on face calcified (calcified hematoma).. help!

My son's hematoma was no longer painful once the initial swelling went down; however, he was 5 yrs old when he got it. Your brother in law's doctor will hopefully look for other causes of his pain. With my son, over 10 years, the bump subsided but always (to me) was slightly noticable. When he was 15 and close to done with all his growing, I took him to a facial plastic surgeon at a hospital near Boston, Massachusetts, who ordered a series of MRI's of his head. Interestingly, it showed the hematoma gone, and in its place was normal tissue. What I had thought was the hematoma was actually normal tissue growth on his cheekbone. The doctor did nothing, since there was nothing abnormal there any more, and he thought the tissue would re-distribute as my son grew. Sure enough, since then (1 1/2 years), the tissue has receded and the bump is no longer there. So your brother in law's practictioner sounds like he knows his stuff. However, my son's situation may be different since he was still growing when it happened. I wish I could be more helpful to you.. I know there is very little information out there regarding these injuries. Good luck to you and your brother in law-- he is lucky to have you to care about him.
