Ive been in a full length leg cast for 3 months following a compound tibia fracture. Two days ago this cast was changed to one which finishes by the knee - just over the knee so allows a little more movement through the joint than the full length cast did.
Since the change of cast, ive been experiencing some very severe pain through my knee. The smallest movement creates a pain so sharp it takes my breath away - bending, twisting, lifting etc are all out of the question. I was advised that at first i would experience a little discomfort - a LITTLE? My knee is more painful than the broken bone at the moment!
I understand this is likely to be due to 3 months of the joint being completely immobile, there seems to be little muscle in this leg at all now
I was unable to attend physiotherapy on the day that the cast was changed and am now not due back to fracture clinic for a further 3 weeks, is there anything i can do to help build up the strength through my knee and hopefully lessen the pain felt through it, in the meantime? Bearing in mind i still dont have a whole lot of movement through the leg owing to the half-cast?
Am i liklely to experience the same amount of discomfort through my ankle when the cast finally comes off for good?
good luck on your healing it sounds like its geting better, at least your out of the full leg cast, you should try ice and heat on your knee, it will take a while for it to get better, your ankle will be just about the same, stiff and sore. Age also has a lot to do with it, the younger you are the faster it will heal. where abouts did you break your tibia, if it was close to the knee that will make a huge difference also
Im 20, so guess age is still on my side! Fracture was lower tibia
We phoned the hospital this morning, there's no clinic until the end of the week so if its still bad on thursday they want me back in again and if it gets any worse, then its a trip to A & E
Fingers crossed it doesnt come to that - ive seen enough of that hospital to last me a liftetime!
Cast probably wont come off completely for another month at least so im absolutely dreading what sort of discomfort i'll get then!
