What Is A Lesion On The Bone?

Hi, I fell 3 days ago and hurt my knee. went to e.r. they took several x-rays, and then sent me back for 2 more. The ER doctor said nothing was broken, that I had probably torn some ligaments. Then he said we are very concerned because we found a lesion on the distal femur. he said to please contact my doctor and he needs to order a mri to check into this. They put on a brace e and gave me a walker. its been 4 days, it feels a little better, but I still can't bend it., so what is a LESION?

Re: What Is A Lesion On The Bone?

Hi! Welcome to the board. Sorry that you only got partial information. Same thing happened to me - went to the ER and the found a lesion or cyst and said I needed to see an orthpedic surgeon. They will evaluate you, send you for more xrays, possibly ctscan or mri, and possibly a bone scan if you have multiple locations.
The best thing I can tell you is REMEMBER - benign bone lesions are very common and you can also continue to live life fully without surgery (unless you are having trouble). And they might also recommend a bone biopsy - but this is still very common. So try not to worry too much.
Also - remember that different doctors will call it different things - lesions, cysts, and tumors have all be used to describe my benign bone lesions/cysts/tumors.
You do need to call a doctor, but I would highly recommend an orthopedic specialist. Usually they will have their own xray machines (some even have their own mri machines) in-house and you don't have to wait on the results.
Wishing you the best and let us know what happens.

Can you share you story with me. do you still have the tumor and did they remove it or anything. did you have pain in the area where they found it before getting hurt? I will keep in touch as I go along. anything else you know about this type of thing please when you find time share it with me. I am scared.

Re: What Is A Lesion On The Bone?

south249,
I have no trouble sharing my story with you or others if it can ever help, but I do have a very rare bone disease (as of right now the only in the US diagnosed).
I did go to the ER due to feeling like something was out of place in my shoulder. I had been having this pains/sensations for some time along with what my doctor had told me was an inflamed hip joint. Well - they did see what they called a lesion on my shoulder and recommended the orthopedic. He asked where all I had pains and then did xrays of my hips. Well - he said cysts were there too so he sent me to get a full body bone scan. This is a nuclear medicine and anywhere you have abnormal growth in your bones will highlight on the scan. I ended up with 9-10 spots. He told me there was nothing to do about them - just wait and see. When I spoke with a family friend who's a nurse - she said get a 2nd opinion. I did and after ct scans of my hip and shoulder, he diagnosed me with fibrous dysplasia and said I needed surgery right away to stabilize my hip.
The funniest thing I can remember is that the ct tech started doing the scan, stopped after the first few rotations, called the head radiologist stat (all of which I heard). After he looked at the scan, he came over and proceeded to talk so sweetly to me "Honey - do you know why they are doing this scan?" I said Sure - I've got tumors. So he told me that he was changing the scan to provide more detail and that it would take longer. I still think of that day 12 years ago and laugh, but think very fondly of the hospital to this day.
Anyway I did have a rod and pins placed in my femur. He did a bone biopsy and they confimed it to be a fibrous material.
Well, since I had a name for my disease, I looked up everything I could on the internet. Let me tell you now that there are some VERY scary stories online that no one should read when they are still in the unknown. I proceeded to get into a clinical study of this disease with the NIH. Once there and having gone through the entire study of tests, they determined that I did not have that disease, but they did not know what I had. Eventually (3 months later) he called me at home and told me that everywhere he had taken my films in the US - no one knew what this was - possibly a new disease. Well he sent it to Italy to the world's best bone pathologist and finally got the diagnosis of angiomatosis of the bones. I still go to NIH every 12-18 months. They did a full study of my family and I am now published!!! Hey - gotta get something out of this, right?!
Anyway - although my story is long and may not help you with your situation. Know that I have been there in the unknown and understand your concerns and worries (yes, we did think I had cancer for a short period of time). There are several people here on the board that has been there and understands too.
So I did have pains/sensations with my lesions (most people with FD don't know they have something until they get xrayed for something else and it's discovered), some of the lesion(s) removed, most of it has grown back (part of the problem with my disease), but I still live life to its fullest!!!
The next step for you is getting to the orthopedic specialist and getting more film of your femur. Then the diagnosis can get started and you will have somewhere to go from here? Please know you are in my thoughts and prayers!

Re: What Is A Lesion On The Bone?

south249,
I can't believe you have to wait until mid-feb before seeing an ortho. Did this doc see your mri results or did the person scheduling you know that you have a tumor (that you are not just a regular ortho injury patient)?
I think I would look into other ortho (if insurance permits).
I too have a herniated disc in my lumbar that bothers me all the time (work is so much fun - NOT)! My MIL used those patchs after her double knee replacements last feb for the first 4 months. It helped her be able to do her PT without so much pain to get the improvement she needed. She came off them rather well - no addiction that we could tell. I do know that the oral pain meds triggered her chrons disease back to full flare - so thus the patchs.
Let me know how you are doing. And if you do get another appt. And what they decide to do from there.
Take Care!

Re: What Is A Lesion On The Bone?

Just wanted to say hello to south and wish you the best.
Also, hrtofluv, I appreciate your story being posted here. You certainly have been through plenty. You can always tell when someone has had more than their share of setbacks in life as they have such a calmness about them when helping others along life's bumpy road.
I've been spending too much time thinking about this tumor in my distal femur. It is somewhat painful, but not constantly, until this past week. My biopsy will be wed the 2nd. I have no idea if it's cancer or not, I mostly think NOT, but there's always that wondering. It's 4.1 x 4.7 cm, seems to be well defined, which I've been told is a good sign. I have definately invited God to take this trip with me so I know I'll be alright, no matter what the biopsy result is. There will be a blessing in it somewhere. I've had so many health issues over the past couple of years, it must be coming to an end soon. God bless all! Sput
