Broken Tibia - Bone Disorders Message Board

One of my friends just recently broke her tibia. She didn't need surgery and is in a cast right now. I want to do what I can to help her since she is used to be very independent and hates having to cut back on activities and sit at home with her leg up! She's the type of person who doesn't ask many questions when she sees the MD so I'm wondering if anyone here can help me a little? Also, don't they normally give you pain meds for the first few days? I know my friend hates taking any kind of medication but it seems like that would really help her right now?

How long does it take for recovery from this? I know that it varies for each person but what is a general time frame? She loves to run and ski and is active - when this is healed will she be able to do the same activities she did before? The bone was broken somewhere near the middle of her shin and from what I've read the breaks that are on or close to the ankle are more difficult. Anyone have any help/suggestions on this? Thanks,

The damage from the break will determine how long it takes to heal. But if no surgery was required, I think your friend is up for a quicker recovery. Yes, pain meds are prescribed for people with broken bones unless the person says they don't need them.
Your friend will be able to do anything she wants after her bone heals - everything she use to do and more. She won't nothing much difference. Now as she gets older (in her 40s) she may have some arthritis there and nothing the change in weather.
As for what you can do for her...the best present I got from a friend when I had hip surgery was coming in and doing my toenails for me. She did the whole foot rub and manicure to get me ready for the summer months. And to prove it meant alot to me - I'm still talking about it 12 years later. My surgery was in 93.
