osteochondroma rt hip - Bone Disorders Message Board

Hi everyone! This is my first post and I'm desperate for some advice!

I'm 22 years old, work as an LPN, and go to school. Two years ago I went in to see my family doc because I was having pretty severe rt hip pain. After a routine xray, it showed I had an osteochondroma in the rt hip joint capsule. I would have good days and bad days with the pain. On the bad days, it felt like a grinding ache that throbbed and was giving me referred pain in my buttocks and thigh. After seeing an ortho specialist, he decided that because the tumor is so deep, he didn't want to do surgery until the pain was interfering with my life everyday. The naproxen he gave me doesn't work, and I've stopped jogging because it just irritates it. I really don't know what to do!! It's been two years since the diagnosis and I'm just frusterated. Should I go for another opinion or do you guys think it could be something else? ANY advice is welcome! Thank you so much!

Sorry no one has responded to your desperate post for advice or information. As for your diagnosis - I've looked online for this diagnosis. Apparently this is a different type of tumor that grows on the outside of the bone. I only have experience with tumors that grow on the inside of the bones.
There is so much more they can do now - MRI, CT to determine the extent of the tumor and sometimes (with contrast) be able to diagnose the exact type of tumor you have based on the margins and whether it's lytic or not. Did the ortho do further testing? Did you get a chance to look at the xrays yourself?
I'd say it's about time for another look at this - to see if it's grown and since you are having to adjust your life around it.
I have had tumor removed from my hip and femur (with intermedullary rod and screws added for stabilization) - so if you are faced with surgery there should be some of us out here that can help you with advice and information. Just post a new thread since this one is titled specifically for this type of tumor and apparently no one has heard of it here, although several have read through it.
Also wanted to let you know that based on what I've read - this is the most common type of bone tumor and is always benign.
