This info would be helpful to me as well. I had a giant cell tumor of the first metatarsal and needed bone graft using iliac crest. I went for my 12 week check up and the xray shows non union of the bones so I need a bone stimulator. I go back in 6 weeks and I was hoping that is enough time for the bone to fuse.
LT Foot 10- have you been able to put any weight on your Foot? Did they give you any reasons why it was not healing? Did they give you any suggestions on what to do other than the bone stimulator? I got mine yesterday. My foot goes inside it. You place the area where the beam comes from over the fx bone and leave it there for 30 minutes. It sends out low frequency waves which is suppose to help stimulate bone growth. Apparently this is a fairly new model, because the other ones out there, the patient has to use for 8 hours. So if you get one, ask for the one that you only have to use 30 minutes a day. The rep told me that the % of sucess is around 60-70%. He said you have a better chance of sucess if you do not smoke, are not a diabetic, not an alcoholic or not overweight. I have to use it for 2 months.
Are you seeing a podiatrist or an orthopaedic?
I am non weightbearing and have been since August. I have to wear it for 6 weeks which is when I see my Dr again. I am seeing an orthopedic oncologist. My tumor was benign but very large. He did not tell me why this was not healing, however I have been doing everything by the book, I do not smoke, I have been taking extra calcium the only thing I have done was had a glass a wine for dinner but that was 1 glass. So I just hope this work. I am waiting for the guy who I am dealing with for the bone stimulator to call me. Does it hurt at all?
It does not hurt. I use my for 30 minutes a day. You just have to make sure the beam is directed over the bone and that can be difficult. Do ask your doctor about the one that is only 30 minutes. The rep for this product told me most of them have to be used for 8 hours a day. I can not image that.
I had a bunion removed and he broke my bone in the foot to lengthen it. He put a graft in there. I go back on Friday to get two more pins put in the bone where the graft is to stabilize it. I am not looking forward to this at all.
