Question Post surgery bone infection from screws?

I had PTT surgery with calcaneal osteotomy on 12/27/07. The usual recovery (except for blood clot in calf after 4th week which gave me another 6 days in the hospital). Now I am 6 weeks out, have a walking boot and permission to begin walking carefully...if there is pain, I'm to back off.

There are still steri strips over my incisions, and I'm supposed to let them come off by themselves. The steri strip over the back of my heel came off when I changed socks. This is where the screws where put in to hold the moved heel bone in place. I began to notice a yellow discharge which later turned to slight bleeding. I put a bandaid over it. After talking with a friend who is a nurse, I called my doctor and told him about this. He said to keep it dry and covered and he wants to see me tomorrow.

I am concerned that this may indicate an infection in the bone. Has anyone any experience with infection due to the pins or screws inserted into the foot during such surgery?? If so, what kind of treatment can I expect? What I'm reading online is kinda scary.
