Ankle - fractured fib, talus bone bruise, severe sprain

Hello. I didn't see a step on Jan. 31st and twisted my right ankle and fell. X-rays showed a non-displaced fractured fibula. I wore a cast for two weeks, no weight bearing and then x-rays showed that it had healed enough to take that off and am now wearing an air cast ankle brace.

I couldn't walk so on Sat. I had an MRI that showed a bad sprain and a grade one bone bruise on the talus. Distal fibula is healing nicely.

This really hurts. I cannot believe how one's life can just change in a second. Most of my pain is in the outer part of the ankle where the ligament and soft tissue damage is. Some pain is on the other side. At best it feels like a toothache is in my ankle.

My orthopedic doc said I can weight bear as tolerated - I've tried some but it does hurt. And he wants me to do therapy to restore range of motion - epsom salt soaks, drawing the alphabet with the foot, gentle stretching. Alos, elevation and ice as needed.

It has only been three weeks and that is not a long time even though it feels like an eternity.

Any advice from anyone going through something similar? Has anyone managed to successfully heal something like this?

Thanks.

Re: Ankle - fractured fib, talus bone bruise, severe sprain

Actually, I read my MRI report and it states that there are two bone bruises on the talus and one on the tibia and one on the cuboid bone. The sprained ligament is the ATFL.
The MRI showed the fibula to be in great shape.

I am hoping someone will reply to this.

I will follow up after seeing the specialist next week.

Follow up

I saw a podiatrist who diagnosed the beginnings of RSD - reflex symphony dystrophy also known as CRPS - complex regional pain syndrome. My right foot, ankle and lower leg were icy cold, Every time I tried to stand, I'd feel an electric shock on the bottom of my foot.

She tried a cortisone injection into the subtalar joint. I ended up much worse for two days and it didn't help much.

At 5 weeks post injury, I went to physical therapy and took my first real steps. It hurt like hell, but was wonderful! I was using two crutches still for support. Last week was one crutch, this week none.

I still have pain and am hoping that my healing continues. It is now 8 weeks since I got hurt. I have a limp sometimes, and feel like my foot isn't quite right. Sometimes the pain is better, sometimes it is awful.

I will be in physical therapy for awhile more.

Even though I still hurt, I have so much more ability than a few weeks ago. I highly recommend physical therapy.

Re: Ankle - fractured fib, talus bone bruise, severe sprain

Hi, no one else had a response so I will even though my issue was kind of different. I had fallen asleep on the couch and when I woke up and stood on my feet, my leg was asleep and buckled. I snapped my ankle. I went urgent care, had an xray but dr said the ankle wasn't broken but stay off of it and use crutches until I saw an ortho. About a week or so later, I it was determined I had broken the talus bone and had spontaneous necrosis. I was told to not put any weight on it at all or the bone could break off and the dr would have to surgically go in and try to collect the pieces. It was a long haul but months later it was fine. I remember in my research, reading that sometimes a sprain is really a talus bone fracture because it doesn't always show up right away. You might want to check it out.

Re: Ankle - fractured fib, talus bone bruise, severe sprain

One week ago I missed a step and severely sprained my ankle and broke my fibula. The pain in the ankle is still pretty severe, and I still have swelling. How long does the swelling last??? I had a full cast, toe to thigh, for a few days that was put on in the ER. Now I have a walking boot, and am on crutches and told to walk on it from time to time to test the pain. The pain is very much there still. I know it won't be better over night, but I wondered how long is the swelling going to last? I have iced it a few times a day and keep it propped when I am sitting or sleeping, but I cannot shower or anything on my own. I need my husband's help. I can't do anything!! Is this normal? I am very unstable on crutches because I am so uncoordinated. Would a walker help?

Re: Ankle - fractured fib, talus bone bruise, severe sprain

Hi, MegsMom. Sorry you hurt yourself!

Honestly, the swelling is going to last months with a bone injury. Even after most of the pain is gone and you are walking again, it'll still swell sometimes.

Keep up with the icing and elevating. You may want to get a plastic chair so you can shower more easily.

Have you had someone (nurse or physical therapist) show you how to use the crutches correctly? It's harder than you might think. If you think you need a walker, though, ask for it. The last thing you need is to fall and do more damage to yourself.

Did they say you should use the crutches, but put your injured foot on the ground when you walk? That's called partial weight bearing. Also, if you are putting weight on the foot in the walking boot, be sure you have a shoe with a very thick sole on the good foot, to improve your balance. I used a hiking boot.

They did show me how...I just am uncoordinated.

Also, my walking boot thing does not have room for a shoe. I am supposed to just put my foot in it. Is that what you are talking about?

Re: Ankle - fractured fib, talus bone bruise, severe sprain

No, I mean your other foot. You have the boot on your hurt foot, and a shoe on your good foot. The walking boot has a very thick sole, so if you walk with a regular sneaker on your good foot, you're going to be uneven, like the people in those V8 commercials a few years back. (You know, "Get straight with V8!")

Once you are walking in the boot, you need a shoe on your good foot with a thick sole, to improve your balance.

Haha...yes I remember those commercials. That makes sense. I thought maybe there was a boot I wasn't aware of for the injury. I guess since it has only been a week it will take time and I am being impatient.
