5th Metatarsal- cast, walking boot, both?

After breaking my 5th Met, I did research and found out that some people were in a cast, some in only a walking boot with crutches and some in boot without crutches. I, myself, have been put in 6 weeks of a walking boot, no crutches. Not sure on the kind of fracture but I'm leaning towards a mid-shaft or spiral fracture. Doc said the bones are aligned so no need for surgery (unless I want to heal faster). What determines a need for cast, boot, etc? My doc was very vague with my injury...just came in with the walking boot, said the bones were in alignment, told me 6 weeks in boot and no real other restrictions. From other posts, seems mine is mild...makes me wonder if I'm going to heal correctly. I've been real careful with the foot...only bearing weight on the inside of my foot (with the boot), staying off it (when not working) and not much more. I do feel a pinch when I walk but sometimes, nothing. Can these breaks be mild? Should I demand another x-ray after a length of time? Should I talk to an orthopedic doc?

Re: 5th Metatarsal- cast, walking boot, both?

I broke my heel bone 6 years ago and my orthopedic surgeon put me in a boot w/ crutches for 3 weeks, and then another 4 months in just the boot. My heel bone was still in alignment so he thought it would heal correctly and he was right. How long have you been in the boot? My primary doctor took the xrays and then forwarded them to the surgeon for his opinion. Could your doctor do that? Then you wouldn't have to have more xrays.

Hi there..I have been wondering what is going on with you. I hope you are doing well, and healing in time for spring. I am still non-wt-bearing, but am healing too, and hope to be getting back to normal ina few weeks. Drop me a note and let me know how you're doing.

Hi!!
Been meaning to drop you an update and find out how you were doing, as well. I'm now seeing a Podiatrist and going into the 6th week (Monday will be). The doctor has informed me I'll be in the boot for a total of 8 or more weeks. Took another set of xrays and although (to me) it looked the same, he said it was healing. He prescribed an Exogen 4000 bone stimulator which I'm in the 3rd day of treatment. The stimulator heals 85% of non unions...accelerates the process. Luckily, my insurance covered it. Did you know there are 7 bones in the body that are considered to be at high risk of developing into a non-union (without surgical fixation)? Yep, the 5th Metatarsal is one. I've received a new boot...from knee to toe. Feels sooo much better with it. I think the other did more harm than good. Anyways, still working around 12 hours a week (3 hour days) and having to ice my foot after my shifts. Go to bed swollen and wake up normal. The doctor also pressed on the fracture site and my pain level was bearable...I think he was impressed. I can still feel the pinch when I accidentally step wrong...which leads me to believe I'm far from healed. Still wondering about my weight-bearing status. I go next Tuesday for more x-rays and to see if the stimulator has been doing it's job.
So, how many weeks out are you again? Are your xrays looking good? Did you have fixation or no displacement of your fracture? Let me know how you're healing.

Re: 5th Metatarsal- cast, walking boot, both?

Well, I too am at 6 weeks yesterday. My 4 week check showed some healing. Doc said bone was at the sticky stage. Wanted to cast for an additional 4 wks. I begged off and was given a walking boot. But still no weight bearing. I have been though, a little. Walking is intoxicating when you haven't been. No surgery, hopefully there won't be...the doc threatens I am trying to be good. I think when I go on April 6, I may get to start some weight bearing, and physical therapy. I am still not allowed in with my students until can walk on my own, w/ no crutches. I have run through all of my vacation time, and now just have hours cut! Killing me. I am glad you are improving and got someone to really pay attn to your specific needs. Doesn't it seem like we will be doing this forever? The bone stim. really do seem to do a lot...are they talking surgery to you at all? I really hope things go well(for both of us). I DO believe the worst is behind us!

Hello!

Just got back from the foot doc. The x-ray shows signs of healing. Looks like the top part of the fracture has started to fuse together...is that the sticky stage you mentioned? Such a slow process! I was hoping to see more of it healed (being that I've got the bone stimulator). Have you asked your doctor about one? My Mom is seeing an Orthopedic surgeon...she mentioned my situation and the receptionist commented that I should see a remarkable difference within 4 weeks of using it. Some insurance companies cover it (they are over $3K) but people are selling them on that famous "bid & win" site for around $200 (this forum won't let me post the name). You do, however, have to bid on most of them and I watched one that shot up to $300. Still a far cry from what my out of pocket expense is going to be.
Anyways, hope you've got some good news to share about your foot. Keep in touch!

Re: 5th Metatarsal- cast, walking boot, both?

I'm almost 9 weeks. My nightmare started at the ER because my ankle was disfigured and swelling, where xrays were not correctly read until the next day. They referred me to a doctor who did not treat feet! My PCP referred me to an orthopedic specialist who gave me a post op shoe and said I would be fine in 6 weeks (on day before vacation). He said there would be a lot of swelling and bruising, but said I would be fine.

After 5 weeks of swelling, bruising and PAIN, I went to a podiatrist. He was upset by the way I had been treated. The lack of treatment in the beginning made the break worse. He put a soft cast on and a boot. A week later, he checked it again and put a new soft cast on it. 10 days later, he put another soft cast on because of the swelling. It is not aligned exactly right, but it is healing...only about 65%. I don't know if it will need to be pinned or will continue to heal. I see the doctor again next week.
