Wink triple arthrodesis/please help!!

hi everyone,
first anyone that can take the time and respond to my questions, i would be more grateful than i can put into words. i will give you as much details as i can without being long winded. [I] am diabetic 49 year old male and have been for approx. 9 years. i am on an insulin pump and my sugar is in control. last may i injured the tendons in my right foot at work stepping in to a hole, was put in aircast which developed into a blood blister that broke causing a massive staph infection in the heel and instep causing removal of a large area of tisssue from infection. i was lucky to have a national recognized podiatric surgeon that saved my foot. i was put on a wound vaccum for maximium healing and endured skin grafting and the outcome exceeded expectations and healed even though there is some loss and scaring. i was non weightbearing and one was on top of the at the end of august when it was close to being healed i lightly steped on the foot going to the bathroom, due to the weakness to the tendons and ligaments from surgery, it fractured multiple bones in the outer part of foot and dislocated in 2 place one mid foot so severely the front half of the foot bone was on top of hindfoot bone. i had to have an external fixator surgically placed with 19 pins to stabllize the reconstructive surgery then went to a full cast to the knee for 6 weeks, when it was removed the fractures had healed, but themid foot dislocation only partially so a fifth operation was performed requiring a triple arthrodesis with internal pins and screws to stabilize the ankle and hind foot, the incisions were removed at 2 weeks, unfortunately one small area at the end of the incision at the outside ankle is draining tissue fluid (it is healing and depth is down to 2.5 cms deep). my surgeon said the stability and flexibility have healed enough to start physical therapy and limited weight bearing, but won't until the open wound heals closed. it has now been 8 1/2 weeks since the arthrodesis at this stage the flexibility up and down and the toes feel good the outer side of the foot and the ankle area feel stiff and ache and i.m on vicodin every 4 hrs as needed, i was on percocet but hated the feeling and made me feel nauseous, i also try to limit vicodin to early morning and before bed as i don't like painkillers in general. my surgeon is great but not one for answering questions or giving time frames. my questions to any of you goibng through this or have gone through it is what can i expect as far as future recovery? process of weight bearing?crutches?walker?walking boot?how long in each? pain levels during process? work ability how soon, i do a good deal of standing and walking supervising my employees? my wife has been an angel through 8 months of non walking and taking care of me and i would like to take her somewhere in april, but not in a wheel chair do you think i would be able to be with 1 crutch by then or a cane perhaps? one final question any advice on how to handle the depression of loneliness and being non weight bearing for 8 months? i am on antidepressants and have books, dvds,tv, laptop and exercise my arms and good leg to strengthen but i am at the stage where nothing seems to alleviate the frustration and hopelessness of walking again(how we all take something so basic for granted) as much as friends family and coworkers are there and supportive, i need to talk to people that really understand my feelings and frustrations. any thoughts, suggestions, help comments, or advice from fellow sufferers would be incredibly helpful and appreciate. anyone i can help or answer questions for please feel free to e-mail me as life is not a one way street and i still believe there is good kind people out there and we need to help and support each other. thank you very much and god bless

Re: triple arthrodesis/please help!!

Hi there! I am so sorry you are going through such a grueling ordeal with your precious feet. I am only one week out of surgery on one foot for bunion and arthritis, so it is nothing as trying as what you must be dealing with. I just want to offer you some encouragement and say that foot problems seem to be a long-term process, the more involved the procedure, the more recovery time involved.

If your doc is not receptive to your questions, I would seriously consider taking all of your files, x-rays, reports, etc. to another who has a great rep for both his work and patient rapport. Having a caring, positive doctor who is willing to both listen and answer your questions goes a long way in the healing process. You have been through so much and deserve to have quality care through your long recovery process.

We do take walking and our feet for granted. So be thankful for the years they have served you and resolve to give them the time and care they now need to fully heal so they can serve you longer. You are too young to stop now!!! To relax during more frustrating times, try meditation, listening to music with good headphones or watching funny movies. Laughter is a proven healer! Stay positive and find yourself a great new doc....you will get there!! God bless you and your family.

Thumbs up Re: triple arthrodesis/please help!!

hi,
thank you so much for taking the time to reply to me!! I am so sorry for the surgery you have gone through, and hope your recovery is successful and heals quickly. You are right though foot problems of any kind seem to be a long process, so i'm trying to focus on one day at a time and to concentrate on what I need to do to get to the next step in recovery, not look too far ahead but the desire to be mobile is so strong. But please know your thoughts, good wishes and suggestions are helpful to my recovery and more importantly my peace of mind and I'm going to try some of your suggestions. I thank you and wish you the very best in your recovery and feel free to contact me If I can be of any help to you, or you just need someone to talk with!!

My very best and God Bless!!

Re: triple arthrodesis/please help!!

I am one week into recovery from triple arthodisis surgery by an orthopedic surgeon.
This particular Doc, I searched for over a year. I am a Diabetic and suffered from Charcot
joint. My ankle was disintigrating over the past several years. My arch had collapsed
and my foot had rotated 30 degrees outward. It was a four hour operation.

I have been told that it will be about 8 weeks in a non weight bearing status, followed
by a minimum of 4 weeks in a walking boot. I will walk with some pain over the next six
months.

Several things that I have learned. First, this type of surgery requires a specialist in
orthopedic surgery. Your Doc better have four years in training for this particular operation. I would never let a podiatrist touch this.

If it gets screwed up or an infection gets loose, you could say goodbye to the lower leg.

I will keep you in my thoughts as I fight my own battle.

Tom

Hi - hang in there.......... I have been through 6 weeks in a traditional non weightbearing cast and am now into my third week in a moon boot. I am finally feeling good about the whole episode. I have jettisoned my crutches, can move around freely in my boot - have increasing movement each day and am pain free compared with the past three years leading up to surgery. YOUR SITUATION WILL IMPROVE - patience is the greatest asset you can have right now!!

Hello everyone. Nonwghtbearct I was wondering how you are doing being your surgery seems to be the same as mine although I also had some nerve entrapment issues. I'm about 5 weeks post op. Are you still in need of pain med? I'm hoping once I get out of the non weight bearing cast even though I realize it will take time to slowly start putting weight on both feet again I will be able to deal with the pain better.

Re: triple arthrodesis/please help!!

My weight bearing cast comes off next week. I am going to take it very slow and
minimize the danger of reinjury and another operation. My best to you and don't
overdue it. My Doc tells me a full year to get a 100% rcovery

Re: triple arthrodesis/please help!!

Thanks 63spirit. Just two questions, is your weight bearing cast actually one of those removal type boots? Also at what point did you stop the pain meds? I wish you the best of luck and hope to hear how your progress continues. Thanks.

Re: triple arthrodesis/please help!!

As of right now, I am on schedule for the following casts & meds:

1. The first cast was a simple wood splints job to allow the ankle to expand and contract. First 2 weeks, ankle inspection and staple/stich removal and
infection check.

2. The next 6 weeks I'll be in a fiberglass cast. Walk only with knee walker.

3. The final month will be in a walking boot. non weigt bearing.

4. Pain Meds: 1 to 2 oxycodine evry 4 to 6 hours. I usually take 2 around noon & 2 at bedtime.

Take one day at a time. If things don't go according to plan, you may want to see a new Doc. It took me a year to find mine. Be patient.

Re: triple arthrodesis/please help!!

Still unable to walk without pain. I cannot recommend this surgery, unless you have an experienced surgeon. My Doc graduated fom GW and ended up doing a 4 year
fellowship. My surgery lasted 4 hours. He does 4 of them a day.

In my case, he opened the shin bone and took a 4" slice; then he rotated the foot, 30
degrees inward : Then came the 4 screws. Wish you good luck. Tom

Re: triple arthrodesis/please help!!

I had my ta in Feb 2011 and I can't say I wish I didn't have it done but lately I've been having pain that seems related to my Achilles tendon . I look over my doc's surgical report and I don't see any mention of him lengthening the tendon which I've heard is commonly done with this surgery. I'm going to first try to apply heat and stretch it by exercises and if that doesn't help I'll think about going back to see what he thinks. I also have four screws and wonder if one of them can possibly be contributing to my discomfort. Have any of you had your achilles tendon lengthened? Also 63spirit I believe our surgeries are about a month apart and wondered what kind of pain are you having and are you taking anything for it?
