Broken distal fibula
I broke my distal fibula on Monday. I was walking to see my regular medical provider when I fell into a pipe. I didn't see it because the grass was covering it. The one that didn't break feel in the pipe and the other that did just buckled and I felt a "snap". I barely made it to my providers office because it hurt like hell. She looks at it and says she doesn't think it's broken and I don't need an x-ray. I told her I was going to the ER anyway(I needed my ride to come and take me there) and she said that if I did to let her know what happened.
I spent 5 hours in the ER that night. They splinted it and referred me to an Orthopedic surgeon. No surgery is needed and he just had his girls put a cast on it. He said it was fractured above the ankle. The cast comes off in 4 weeks and I will have another x-ray taken.
However, my provider at the community health center has put in a referral to see the ortho who volunteers so hopefully I can see them and save some money since it's expensive seeing the other one.
I was using crutches but they hurt my underarms and I was so sore so I went and rented a knee scooter-best thing I've done. The cast I have on is partial weight bearing but I've been so afraid to screw the healing process up so I haven't tried that too much. I also got some no rinse shampoo and body wash-not even going to try the showering route after last years attempt when I had bone spur removal on both feet.
Can anyone tell me what the whole process will be and how long in weeks it will last? I'd like to know what to expect. TIA
