Broken my Fibula...Now What?

Hi..

Just wondering if anyone can help me out on my lil problem I have here.
I broke the distal end of my left fibula 7 days ago. The doc immediately put me in a fiberglass cast and not to bear any weight on the the leg for the next 6 weeks. Will I need to be on crutches for the whole 6 weeks or will there be a point where I can have the cast removed and replaced with an air cast?

I really need to be on my feet again within the next 3 weeks as I'll be on a new job assignment. Will it help if I get the fiberglass cast replaced with an aircast?

Thanks in advance!

Re: Broken my Fibula...Now What?

Don't bear any weight means no walking for six weeks, you need to be on crutches. If you don't follow instructions, you'll be in too much pain to think or function, and of course, the bone won't heal properly.

Now, there are options. You could get a wheelchair, or a device called a knee scooter, to make it easier to get around. (The wheelchair is more efficient for long distances, but the knee scooter fits better in tight indoor spaces and allows you to stand.)

For now, just keep the leg propped up as much as possible, it's the best way to ease pain and swelling and promote healing.

Re: Broken my Fibula...Now What?

Thanks Jane..

Just came back from my 2nd week appointment today. If everything turns out OK, I should be out of the cast by September.

Thanks for the knee scooter you recommended. Need to get one as soonest

Re: Broken my Fibula...Now What?

Excellent!

Rolleraid or Turning Leg Caddy are the best brands of knee scooter. Invacare brand is not as safe/stable.
