Re: Ulnar shortening

Hi ya I'm doin ok. Not taking that many pain killers.

I did hurt it Saturday evening I accidentally smacked it against the arm of the sofa. A few minutes later I burst out cryin.

I keep my arm on pillows at night aswell. The pain isn't as bad as it was. I just wish my arm would stop itching lol. I can feel a few of the stitches under the bandage and dressing. I've had my old scar opened again. I did say to the surgeon about how your surgeon did yours and he said everyone does it differently.

My stitches come out next Wednesday and my consultant wants to see me aswell. I'm wondering wat ill have on after the stitches come out.

I might be getting my bandage and dressing change tomoro the one I've got now I can feel it getting loose. I'm goin to see a pharmacist tomoro to see wat he says.

Hope your doin ok.

Re: Ulnar shortening

Glad to hear your pain is doing well.

I really hated the itching from the stitches. I was very ready to get the stitches out after about a week. By my 2 week mark, I was going crazy. The ice I was using helped a bit.

I had my 2nd therapy session today. It is mostly all about massaging to loosen the muscles and work the scar tissue. He also spent time doing passive ROM as things loosened. Not much by the way of exercises yet. My restriction to things with resistance is still in place for a couple weeks.

I've been trying hard not to do much with my hand. Still, I have a general soreness that gets worse by nighttime. I'm dealing with the arthroscopic stuff in addition to the bone stuff so I'm not sure how much of each is influencing the soreness.

Re: Ulnar shortening

I think my itching is cos I shaved my arm before the op so the drs didn't have to do it.

It will be interesting to find out wat I have on my arm after my stitches come out as my surgeon used the old scar.

I've got to go back next week to have stitches out and then go back on the 17th jan. my dads had to put micro pore tape round the top of my bandage cos it rolls up.

I'm still getting pain but trying not to take pain killers. I do find it about hard to get dressed and undressed and get ready for bed.

Roll on next week. Lol.

Re: Ulnar shortening

Sorry to hear you are still having problems.

I had bruising on both surgeries. The first one was huge. They put a tourniquet on my arm during both surgeries to reduce the blood flow while they were operating. They really turned wierd colors while healing.

There is a nerve running right through the area where we had our surgeries. I know both my doctors talked to me about it and the risks of damage. They also both told me how they were planning to avoid it. Evidently it is a pretty complicated area to operate on. I'm wondering if you may have had some damage or irritation to that nerve during your first surgery. Did your surgeons talk to you about it?

It might be wise to have another dr. visit to ask about your new symptoms. It sounds like something is really going on. Migraines cam be tough to deal with as well.

I've had 3 PT sessions now. I started a few light exercises last time. He does a lot of scar massage and stretching of my hand and wrist. I have a lot of aching still. I haven't tried doing a lot of lifting yet since I'm still on restrictions from anything with resistance (lifting, pushing, pulling) for a couple more weeks. I need to regain some more ROM and be able to lift before I can tell if my original issue causing pain is healed or not. I will say that my PT seems surprised I have the ROM that I do already. Because of that, he continuously reminds me not to overdo things.

It is hard not wearing a cast or splint. They reminded me constantly not to do something. Without them, I'm constantly having to catch myself from doing something stupid because it so automatic to do something with my dominate hand.

Re: Ulnar shortening

Hi ya. Not long to go til Wednesday and I get my bandage off.

I've been to my drs and had my reflexes and senses done to rule out a stroke, he did say that I cud have a trapped nerve in my back.

I've got to go back next week to talk about the migraines and to see if the numbness in foot is still there.

My consultant said nothin about nerve damage but I suppose that's why ive had my metal plate out. He did say that if my fingers were still goin numb after the op he'd send me for nerve testing.

Re: Ulnar shortening

I had a PT appointment again today, my 5th so far this month. My ROM is significantly improved. It really gives me hope I'll be able to fully pronate and supinate again. I wasn't able to do that fully after the last surgery.

I was asking the PT about if he thought I'd be able to go bowling by summer. I had go give up my league bowling for the last season and a half because of all this wrist stuff. I bowl with a 14 lb. ball so I know that will really show my progress when I can get there. The PT actually thinks I may be ready by the end of January. I'm not holding out for that and don't want to push things, but just the possibility of healing up that well in the near future gets me excited. My last surgeon told me that I'd be able to bowl within 4 months and I never even got close. With my current progress since this last surgery, I really believe I'll get there. Tomorrow is my 1 month anniversary since the arthroscopic surgery and plate removal. That is a lot of healing pretty quickly.

PT today: I'm doing 2 lb. wrist curls and some light resistance. I also had lots of massage, passive ROM work and some electronic nerve and muscle stimulation.

I just want to get back to driving. Glad your ok and doin well in phsyio.

Re: Ulnar shortening

I've been driving since after my stitches came out.

My PT spends a lot of time working on the scar. I have 3 spots that still need a lot of work.

Glad you are out of the splint though.

Re: Ulnar shortening

I'm glad to be out of it aswell. My wrist felt really wierd when the nurse took it off. My arms not doin to bad. I got some more dressings earlier today from asda, the ones the hospital gave me aren't big enough for the scar so have to use 2 at a time but the hospital only gave me 4. So I brought 4 for 69p each and their the same size as the scar so will put one of them on tomoro.

Glad your phsyio is doin really well.

Re: Ulnar shortening

Hi Booboo,

How are you doing? When is your next appointment?

I've been approved for light resistance by my PT. I go back for my next surgical follow-up in a couple weeks.

My scar is healing up nicely, but I've got "lumps" that have formed in a couple areas. They feel a bit boney. I'm not sure if they will go back down or not. I guess time will tell.

Happy New Years!!

Re: Ulnar shortening

Hi ya, Happy New Year to you aswell.

I'm not doin to bad. My next appointment is in 2 weeks. I had a bad day with my arm yesterday where I had the same pain as I did after my 1st surgery, I had to ring my dad and ask him what i shud do and he said get a tuba grip and put it on the radiator to warm it up and put it on my arm. He thinks I might have got it cold some how.

At the moment it's ok.

I've been doin alsorts with my arm apart from driving. The numbness in my hand and fingers has near enough stopped which is a good thing.

Glad your doin so well

Re: Ulnar shortening

Hi Booboo,

If I figure right, you are having your surgical follow up this week. I hope it goes well for you.

I had a follow-up with my ortho surgeon today. He seemed extremly happy with my progress. My ROM is now "normal". It isn't normal for me because my wrists are hypermobile, but he doesn't actually want me pushing things that far. He feels my ROM is in a good place. My supination and pronation still have a ways to go though. I will celebrate when I can do a palms-up with my elbow to my side.

I have a couple hard knots along my incision. My surgeon said they appear to be from where I had some internal stitches. He advised to continue to massage the area regularly to break it up. I spoke to him about the pain I feel when I move my hand to the ulnar side. He explained that when I move my wrist in that direction I'm "squishing" the area that is still healing. He said that as long as the scar is still pink on the outside, it is still healing on the inside too. I've never had anyone explain it to me that way before. I guess it is a reminder that I need to be patient through the healing process.

I haven't yet gotten to the movements that were causing me the most pain pre-surgery so I don't know if things have been "fixed" or not. I know it will come with time.

I will say I was excited at PT a couple weeks ago. In one week, my strength reading went from 25 to 50. I know I can't hold that long-term yet, but it was major progress. The doctor said he anticipates I may only need a few more weeks of PT.

When I left, the doctor said that if I continue to have any of the problems I listed above in 6 weeks, that I should come back to see him then. If I'm feeling better with no problems at that time, it isn't necessary for me to return. Here's hoping I heal a lot between now and then.

I wish you luck at your appointment.

Re: Ulnar shortening

Hi ya. Glad your doin well. I've had to cancel my follow up app for Thursday as the weather is bad over here. The hospital I go to is on a hill so have to walk up it and with the weather being bad I'd rather not tempt fate.

Also the friend I'm stayin with is having her dining room ceiling taken down as the artex has got asbestos in it and cos I've got asthma I'm not putting my health at risk.

I've rebooked my appointment for the 21st of next month. My arm is doin well well. I'm not driving yet but I'm gunna wait til next month.

Glad to hear your doin well tho.

Re: Ulnar shortening

Wow, that is a long wait for your follow-up.

I can't imagine going that long without driving. I have 18 miles each way to and from work.

We had a nice storm come through last Thursday and Friday. Got a couple of feet down here in the valley. I know the bones have healed pretty well by now, but I too worry about falling on the ice that is everywhere.

The weather has been soooo cold. We only had one day barely above freezing in the last several weeks. Now, we have a major inversion with horrible air going on--with no end in sight. It flares the asthma so bad. I haven't stopped coughing for weeks. Today has been one of the worst. I'm on 4 asthma meds right now, in addition to monthly asthma shots.

Hope things continue to go well for you. I have another PT later this week. I'll keep you posted on the progress.

Re: Ulnar shortening

Hi booboo,

I have faith you are ready to drive. Just take your time until you are confident. I was driving since 2 weeks after surgery. You should be healed well enough that you shouldn't do much damage. Glad your wrist is starting to feel better. The scar does take time healing. I'm glad yours is looking better. How is your nerve pain doing? Has this surgery helped with that?

Some of the cracking you feel may be normal. I have some with certain PT exercises. My PT observed and felt my wrist when it was cracking and said it was tendons sliding over each other and not to worry about it.

I went to my PT today. He said it was up to me if I wanted to come back or not. He said I was ready to be released if I want. We decided I'd see how I'm doing in a couple weeks. My ROM is actually ahead of where he said is typical. I still have some work to do, but he said it will come. 3 weeks ago, my strength was at 25. 2 weeks ago, it was at 50. Today, I hit 73. My left is at 90 which he said would be my "normal". He said I'm gaining strength faster than usual after a broken bone. He said 6 months to 1 year is normal for full healing. I do have some pain with certain movements or when I do something I'm not ready for, but the pain isn't as intense as it was a couple weeks ago. I'm also healing up from the arthroscopic stuff too. It is easy to get impatient, but I've been going through the wrist pain for almost 23 months so far. It makes it easy to get very excited with some of these milestone steps. I know I'm nearing a "normal" again. I can feel it. I just need to keep working towards it and being patient.

Let me know how your driving goes. I'm rooting for you.
